Always hire an (LEC) licensed electrical contractor!

1. Ask for their ECRA/ESA licence number. It proves they can operate their electrical contracting business in Ontario.

2. LECs can provide you with a Certificate of Acceptance from ESA once the work is complete. Ask for it and keep it for your records and insurance purposes.

3. When working with a general contractor, make sure the electrician they’re hiring is an LEC, and that they get an ESA permit.

This is for your safety and to insure your coverage by your insurance provider. Don’t let this happen to you!

Do you have Aluminum Wiring in your home?

Was your home built between the mid 1960s and late 1970s? If so, it may have aluminum wiring.

Some insurers will not provide or renew insurance coverage on these homes without an inspection by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Ask your insurance company for their requirements. You may need to repair or replace the wiring, and provide a copy of the Ontario Electrical Safety Authority Certificate of Acceptance to the insurer.

If you need to hire someone to do the repairs, by law it MUST be a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Make sure you hire one familiar with aluminum wiring. The Licensed Electrical Contractor should first provide you with a electrical contractor license and take out any necessary notifications with ESA. The ESA can then review the electrical work. Be sure to get a copy of the ESA Certificate of Acceptance from your Licensed Electrical Contractor for your records.

Found another “handyman’s” fire hazard installation!

Did you know that: if you hire an unlicensed electrician and they get hurt on the job, you’re responsible! And, if an insurance claim can be traced back to work that was performed by an unlicensed electrician, your claim may be denied.

There are many electrical dangers in your home that can put you and your loved ones at risk.
Electrical work is dangerous and always best left to a Licensed Electrical Contractor with the expertise, equipment and training to do the job safely. Hiring the wrong person for the job can result in major property damage, or even loss of life. You may know someone who can do the work cheap, but consider the real cost if something went wrong.

Hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor that holds an ESA/ECRA number. Don’t be afraid to ask!
