Austrian Climate Summit - The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative - please to be a part - the health and humanitarian impacts will grow without urgent mitigation & adaptation, without fossil fuel non proliferation, without treating people humanely, without mobility, and access to medicines for all. We know the solutions and can create new ones. Arnie urged us to act, to fight (and quoting himself acting in Kindergarten Cop, 'stop whining' about a certain someone denying what science is unequivocal on. As importantly, people are witnessing and experiencing the "ferocious impacts" to quote an MSF humanitarian worker in Haiti (see our Hostile Climate research). And people and communities are living the consequences of climate change and environmental degradation in so many places: from extreme weather events, infectious disease burden changes, emerging and ancient diseases, food and water insecurity, and more. Those who suffer most usually contribute least to the triple climate change, pollution, and biodiversity crises. Time to get a grip and implement solutions and be true to commitments, Paris Agreement, human rights, to listen to and support communities, listen to people who have and continue to steward the land including Indigenous and tribal peoples. We're in it together, thanks for having me join in a small part

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Southern Africa on LinkedIn: The HACE Climate Research Report 19/08/2024

super proud to have helped lead this research project resulting in this report just out 'A Hostile Climate' by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Heidelberg University, and narrate the short video below! So honoured to have interviewed many colleagues in climate 'hotspots' who shared what they and their communities face and how they respond or wish to.

"Climate change is having devastating consequences for human health. A new report by MSF's Humanitarian Action for Climate and Environment (HACE) Initiative and Heidelberg University Institute of Global Health describes how climate change deals a "double blow" to life-saving humanitarian aid by simultaneously multiplying health risks and making humanitarian interventions more difficult and complex.

Drawing on interviews with 49 humanitarian staff in 30 countries worldwide, the report details how rapid and slow-onset climate hazards, changes in water availability and quality, and food scarcity linked to climate change are amplifying humanitarian needs.

MSF teams are beginning to adapt to this scenario alongside the communities in which they work. The humanitarian staff interviewed described both real and imagined efforts to adapt MSF and communities to the realities of climate change, including raising awareness, anticipatory action, resilience-building, and collaboration.

"I think we've got the opportunity to… refine our way of working. In Madagascar for example… doing data driven e-prep [emergency preparedness]… and surveillance, not just for infectious diseases, but of things like rainfall or crop yields, and food insecurity and malnutrition, rather than waiting for the kids with severe acute malnutrition to start turning up," says an MSF humanitarian worker in Switzerland
