Some things in this city are hidden in plain sight — but if you’re out and about in Toronto this summer, there’s a lot to discover. Here’s a hint: tucked underneath Yorkdale Mall is an art studio and community space you probably didn’t even know was there. Yup, no joke. That’s where the latest edition of Love, Art & Basketball is happening — at Art Starts, an art space and community hub.

Through the eyes of the artist, this show explores how basketball connects to community, identity, culture, and creative expression -  taking you way beyond the court and the usual stories that come with it. Alongside the art, there’s a full month of programming: think youth forums, a screening + closing party, and a bunch of other cool happenings.

If you’re wondering how to get there: head to Yorkdale, find the Nike store on the main level, then look for the hallway on the left (you’ll spot the Art Starts logo). At the end of that hallway, hop in the elevator to the Lower Level (LL). The space is just through the doors on your right.

In the documentary "Hoop Dreams," directed by Steve James, Frederick Marx, and Peter Gilbert, we witness the journey of two young kids from inner-city Chicago who chase their dreams of becoming professional basketball players. This remarkable film, shot over a five-year span, captures the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gates, along with their families, as they navigate the challenging and competitive world of high school athletics while facing the immense pressures of their home environments and neighborhoods. "Hoop Dreams" continues to enlighten and inspire audiences and is widely recognized as a masterpiece in American nonfiction cinema.

In conjunction with the release of our Purple Paper “Toronto Summer Guide”, Banded Purple will host an event to celebrate the city through it’s music arts and culture. Launching on Friday July 13th, 2018, the event will be an IRL demonstration of the “Summer Guide” that provides event goers with a unique view point into Toronto’s emerging scenes and the lifestyles that surround them.
