This beautiful, private roundabout, with its lush hydrangeas, catches my eye every time I'm here. We water these hydrangeas with a deep, thorough soak three times a week. The reason for this is to encourage the roots to grow deep down into the soil. When you water less often but for a longer duration, the roots are prompted to travel further down in search of water. In contrast, giving plants a little water every day keeps their roots close to the surface, which ends up wasting more water over time.

Loose leash walking is one of the most important exercises you can practice with your dog, not just for control, but for building a stronger, positive relationship with them. At AngelKerr Dog Training, we’re big fans of the Canny Collar. It’s an incredible tool that helps manage pulling and gives handlers more control, especially during training. However, we treat it as a transitional tool – the ultimate goal is to wean dogs off the nose strap and guide them to walk calmly on a flat collar.

What makes the Canny Collar so versatile is how easily it shifts from a head halter to a flat collar with minimal adjustment. This allows for smooth transitions as we teach dogs to walk with minimal tension on the leash.

When practicing loose leash walking, it’s crucial to start with clear objectives. Set a point A to point B with zero tension on the leash, ensuring there’s a noticeable “U” bend. Begin with short distances and gradually extend them. I recommend practicing three times during your walk: first, up and down your driveway before you start, then during the middle of your walk using landmarks, and finally at the end before going back inside.

Consistent practice in these controlled moments builds compliance in more challenging environments. Start with luring your dog for the first few steps, and as they become more comfortable, increase the distance between the lure and their nose. Over time, you’ll see a well-mannered walker who doesn’t need constant management.

If you or anyone you know needs help with loose leash walking, we’re here to help. Reach out for a free, no-obligation consultation. Call, email, and don’t forget to like, follow, and share for more tips and videos.
