We bring back another "Hands in the Dark" experience - the legacy of the Bagşy. In Turkmen culture, a "Bagşy" is a highly respected poet- bard who imparts folk wisdom through epics on the strings of the Dutar.

This week at TAMA - Alex Iskandar performs "Jaighan Ay" on his beautiful Dombra. "Jaighan Ay" is a traditional folk song from Kazakhstan - literally translating to "False Moon" in English.

This week TAMA is pleased to welcome a super talented and versatile artist - Hosein Afshin. In this piece, Hosein presents an Iranian maquam melody - “Bāye Bāye” - performing on his beautiful ethnic string instrument of Tanbur.
The “Bāye Bāye” maqam is one of the ceremonial maqams of the Tanbur, characterized by a joyful atmosphere and performed during national and religious celebrations. The evolution of Tanbur is belived to have been heavily influenced by the Sorna (a traditional wind instrument), and is often played alongside it.

We are excited to have the super talented - Alex Iskandar - perform with us again. In this piece, Alex presents an exquisite piece from Crimea: Bağçalarda Kestane. Enjoy the beautiful melody played on a carrousel of instruments including the bağlama SAZ, clarinet, darbuka and accordion.
The Crimeans, particularly the Crimean Tatars, are an indigenous ethnic group with a rich cultural heritage that has evolved over 2,500 years on the Crimean Peninsula. This East European Turkic nation is known for its unique blend of Mediterranean and Eurasian Steppe influences, which have shaped their customs, language, and identity.
