Joe Lombard is an accomplished underwater photographer inspired by a lifelong connection to the ocean and the quiet mysteries of nature. Drawn to the way so much marine life exists in complete darkness, Joe’s photography captures the beauty and fragility of underwater life, inviting viewers to explore these rarely seen worlds through his lens.

“Amilie” and “Camille” are from Barbara’s 2020 Series, Appearances.

In Appearances, Barbara Cole attributes her dreamlike photography to “portraits” of anthropomorphized flowers. As the title of the series suggests, these images ask what it means to possess a form (human or otherwise) and what is considered worthy to be the subject of an artist’s attention. This exploration inFine to transformation, nature, and beauty is marked by Cole’s exquisite use of water as a medium that naturally reshapes form.

By anthropomorphizing these flowers with stunning finesse, flitting between what we perceive as photography and painting, Cole expands the possibilities of the photograph and the act of empathy altogether. Isolated like all of us during lockdown, Cole began this series out of necessity but also as an exercise in connection. Each flower is given a human name, imbuing them with personalities which, especially during a time of isolation, remind us of personalities we have all been longing to reconnect with.

By alluding to traditional representations of flowers through her unique contemporary lens, the photographs in Appearances embody a timeless sensibility that likewise further expands Cole’s prolific body of work.

Gallery 44’s OUTREACH program is an award-winning darkroom program for youth throughout the GTA. This year’s exhibition, In Search Of, celebrated the creative accomplishments of participating youth from 2 Spirited People of the 1st Nations, Nia Centre for the Arts, The Remix Project and Shoot for Peace.

Dani Cooperman is a mixed media artist who explores the depth of a singular moment through street art and the urban landscape.
Cooperman was drawn to the world of graffiti through her own incessant urge to create. Many street artists experience this same compulsion and utilize public spaces for their artwork despite the inherent risk. In cities around the world, the role of graffiti has become a cultural medium to connect communities and ideas through art.
Harnessing the energy of the space, Cooperman manually adds graffiti and street art elements to her own original photographs. These visual constructions add dialogue to her personal experience in that place and time. The viewer is drawn into the scene and given the opportunity to produce their own emotive connection to the fabricated environment.
