Two dead, one wounded in Richmond Hill shooting 01/11/2014

I'm saddened by the recent shootings in Richmond Hill and heartbroken to learn that it involved youth and is being investigated in relation to other similar acts of violence. Here's my response in the Toronto Sun:

July 11th was a remarkable leap forward for the GTA Faith Alliance, with the opening of their new learning centre in Richmond Hill. The event brought together many diverse and dedicated community members – youth, volunteers, mentors and politicians – to encourage, engage and empower young people to realize their full potential, as well as recognize contributors for their support.

Senator Meredith Celebrates World Day for Cultural Diversity

Ottawa, May 21, 2013 – In commemoration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development Senator Meredith has released the following statement: “I strongly applaud the efforts of UNESCO and the UN Alliance of Civilizations in establishing a day to officially recognize cultural diversity. Their tremendous efforts to raise awareness of cultural differences continues to facilitate dialogue of global diversity and inclusion, deepen understanding of multiple values and combat stereotypes.”
UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001 and the UN General Assembly deemed May 21 World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development in 2002. The 2013 diversity campaign encourages people and organizations to support diversity through shared experiences and the undertaking of everyday kind gestures.
“May we all on this day begin to dialogue and share our collective diverse experiences for a better world.”
