We are moved beyond words with the incredible work of the Breaking Bread cast and creative team, and overwhelming response of the audience. Tonight and tomorrow we bring you our story of Breaking Bread, which is set during a time of great darkness in Ukraine. We are honoured to be able to share our story during National Holodomor Awareness week. So what is Holodomor?

In 1932-33, a man-made famine was inflicted upon Soviet Ukraine resulting in millions of deaths (some estimates are upwards of 10 million). This genocide of the Ukrainian people was denied and hidden from the world for decades, but information about this atrocity became more accessible after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The word Holodomor translates into English as “death by hunger” or “death by starvation”. Today, Canada and other countries recognize this genocide as Holodomor, and commemorate the victims of this tragedy each year on the fourth Saturday of November.

Awareness of the Holodomor has only recently grown on a global scale. The intention of Breaking Bread is to bring this dark part of history to light, in a format that is accessible to a broader audience.
We are fortunate that the Holodomor National Awareness Tour mobile classroom will be at the Huculak Centre this weekend prior to our shows. Be sure to come early and learn more.

Our first show is TOMORROW and we can't wait! Piano, violin, viola, cello, accordian, and our amazing vocalists, actors and dancers are going to make this a show you will not forget! Thousands of people in our very own communities struggle each day to make ends meet and the use of Food Banks has increased significantly over the last several years. Breaking Bread is asking for your help - You can donate non-perishable food items on Friday and Saturday prior to our performances, which will go to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
