Any idea what this is? This is the question I used to ask my class during our discussion on the relationship between form and function.
Here is a hint: the form of each piece relates to how it functions… aka how it moves.
The answer is revealed in the second image.

New video about Emotional Design. Have you ever wondered how meaningful products are created? Like how to design a product with qualities that connect perfectly with the end user.
In order to create something that is meaningful, we need to understand how Emotional Design works. I have an amazing tool for imbuing products with emotional qualities and in this video, I’d like to share it with you.
The examples I analyze are:
- Charles and Ray Eames Lounge Chair - how they wanted to make their chair feel like a well-used baseball mitt
- Naoto Fukasawa’s Juice Skin - which is a juice container that literally adopts the skin of a fruit and is a great example of emotional design. (Pls excuse the typo to his name in the video.)
- We also look at why I chose my table light from the thousands of table lights in the world.

Story time: ⠀
Way back, during I went to a talk on Danish Design . This folding stool by Kaare Klint appeared in the PowerPoint. ⠀
⠀
The twisted parting line is quite an interesting detail. However, the resulting twisted legs (scroll right) peeked my interest because it reminded me of Poul Kjaerholm’s metal folding stool. ⠀
⠀
As it turns out Kaare Klint was also an educator who taught Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjaerholm among others. ⠀
⠀
I’ve read on the Internet (?) that this stool was actually designed by one of Klint’s students.. but not sure if that is true.⠀
⠀
Either way, it’s neat to see the historical lineage ..... and how an idea in one design can translate from one material to another. ⠀
