We write to invite you to a memorial service honouring the life of Edwin Kiplagat, a 32-year-old Kenyan newcomer who tragically passed away in a Toronto shelter on April 30, 2025.

This memorial is a time to come together in grief, solidarity, and love—for Edwin, his family, and all those we’ve lost. It also serves as a call to action for stronger mental health support and systemic change for African refugees.

Our Community Mourns Alisha & Demands Justice

On December 8, 2024, our sister, Alisha Brooks, was taken from us in a preventable tragedy. Her loss follows the recent death of Erixon Kabera at the hands of Hamilton Police, highlighting systemic failures that endanger our communities.
This time, authorities failed to prevent repeat offences, protect women, and ensure our neighbourhoods are safe.

RCHC & ACC honor Alisha not only as a colleague and friend, but as a sister whose voice uplifted unhoused and marginalized people. Her potential and light were stolen by a system that allowed a known violent offender to live in a residential area.

We must ask: Why was this man—convicted of violent crimes—placed in a halfway house near families? Why do safeguards meant to protect women like Alisha continue to fail? How many more lives must we lose before we see real change?

We demand justice for Alisha Brooks, accountability from those who allowed this to happen, and systemic reforms to prevent more needless deaths. Please join us in supporting her family during this difficult time through the GoFundMe campaign (in our Bio). Let us stand together, demand justice, and ensure Alisha’s death is not in vain.

Alisha, we will carry your legacy forward. May you rest in peace.

It’s always an honour to have the opportunity to present our ACAH Village Model & Initiative with folks in the sector & be part learnings on the impact others are having in the eco-system as we work towards building a better society for all.

thanks to the Network for the Advancement of Black Communities’s for their ongoing support throughout this journey 🙏🏾
