In observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project ( MPCPMP) will share a recorded conversation featuring Walk With Web director Professor Paul Lovejoy (York University) and Advisory Board member Professor Corey Walker (Wake Forest University).

The discussion centers on Lovejoy’s forthcoming book, Olaudah of Ikwuano: The True Origins of an African Abolitionist (1742–1766), the culmination of decades of research on Olaudah Equiano (Gustavus Vassa). Drawing on Equiano’s first-person account, the conversation explores his early life in Africa, capture, the Middle Passage, enslavement, and eventual advocacy for abolition.

Several activities have taken place to train and support doctoral students, strengthening scholarship and research innovation through a partnership between the uOttawa, University of Ghana, Legon and Université de Douala Officiel-CERDYM.

As part of this ongoing commitment, Walk With Web delivered Digital Skills Workshops in Ottawa in 2022 and Accra in 2025, equipping emerging scholars with practical tools and critical approaches for digital research.

On March 10, join United Against Hate Canada (UAHC) in commemorating Harriet Tubman Day and celebrating the extraordinary legacy of Harriet Tubman, abolitionist, freedom fighter, and social activist.

Featuring special guest speaker Paul E. Lovejoy, board of director for Walk With Web, renowned historian of African and African diaspora history, Emeritus Professor at York University, and founding director of the Harriet Tubman Institute.

This event will broaden Canadians’ understanding of Tubman’s nearly 12 years in Canada and the significance of St. Catharines as a terminus of the Underground Railroad.

Teaching African Canadian History is developed under the directorship of Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon, an assistant professor of African Canadian History at York University. She is the award-winning author specializing in the history of the enslavement of Black people in colonial Canada, with several notable publications include Emancipation Day: Celebrating Freedom in Canada (2010), The African Diaspora and African Canadian Firsts (2014). Grounded in research and designed as an open resource accessible for all, the project aims to inspires further research and the dissemination of Black Canadian histories.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of , we’re excited to highlight the launch of one of Walk With Web’s 2026 projects, Teaching African Canadian History by Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon (York University / York University - Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies).

This new website and blog offers a comprehensive range of resources on Black history in Canada and the African Diaspora, including books, articles, primary and secondary sources, lesson plans, events, historical sites, and media such as podcasts, films, and videos.
As we reflect on this month, remember that people of African descent have shaped Canada’s social, cultural, and political history since the 1600s and that this history deserves to be recognized and honoured year-round, not only during Black History Month.

York University spotlights the launch of the official Sierra Leone Public Archive (SLPA) website. Developed in partnership with SLPA and collaborating partners, Walk With Web built the digital platform to expand access to Sierra Leone’s documentary heritage and strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.

The project also draws on the expertise of Prof. Paul Lovejoy from York University - Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, alongside contributions from scholars and collaborators worldwide. Together, this collective effort has enabled the SLPA to unite archival stewardship with digital innovation, opening new opportunities for research, education, and cultural exchange.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, its applications are not only transforming industries but also reshaping how we approach global challenges. One striking example is in the realm of road safety.

York University Professor Ali Asgary, in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), has unveiled MotoAI, an innovative AI-powered web application for motorcycle safety. Launched during the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week, MotoAI uses 34 risk indicators to offer personalized risk assessments and crucial recommendations to help riders stay safe on the road. Beyond individual use, it’s also a powerful tool for global road safety initiatives, providing data and trends for policymakers and researchers.

York U prof behind AI-powered motorcycle safety web app launched by UNITAR - YFile York University Professor Ali Asgary has led the development of a cutting-edge web app using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance road safety for motorcyclists.

We are excited to share a video created by our partners at Central University, capturing highlights from our CEO, Kartikay Chadha’s recent trip to Sierra Leone.

The visit marked an important step in our growing collaboration with Central University opening new opportunities for research, digital innovation, and cultural exchange. Last week, Walk With Web (WWW), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Public Archive (SLPA), launched the official SLPA website at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone - USL, in Freetown. This milestone strengthens Sierra Leone’s digital capacity and expands global access to its archival heritage.

The launch was chaired by the Director and Senior Government Archivist, Mr. Albert Moore. Our CEO, Kartikay Chadha, attended the event in person with representatives from across Sierra Leone’s Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. Special thanks go to Mr. Ibrahim S. Kamara (Human Resource Management Office - HRMO Sierra Leone.) who officially launched the website on behalf of the Government, as well as representatives from the His Excellency Julius Maada Bio (Office of the President), the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry Of Technical and Higher Education, Sierra Leone, the The Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Library Board, and faculty from the Department of Information Studies and Knowledge Management and the Department of History and African Studies at FOURAH BAY COLLEGE.

Support from the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme (EAP), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Dragen Lab at the University of Waterloo, the The Harriet Tubman Institute (York University), and the Department of History, University of Worcester anchored this project in a global framework of research excellence.

This achievement reflects true collaboration, bridging technology, archives, and the community. Sierra Leone’s historical legacy is now more accessible than ever for citizens and researchers worldwide.
