Daisy Cray doesn't need saving. ππͺ
Lori Zoss wrote Under Caution with intention, she wanted a female lead who could compete against men on the track and hold her own. Daisy is the winningest female stock car driver in history, and she's the star of her own story.
But here's the thing she still gets the romance. She still deserves a strong, supportive partner. Because you can be a powerful woman and still want love. You can have both.
As Lori says, "You can be a strong woman and still deserve a strong romantic interest in your life."

Short chapters. Big payoff. πβ¨
Lori Zoss wrote Under Caution for busy readers. She's an entrepreneur. She travels. She knows what it's like to want to escape into a book but not have hours to sit and read.
She wrote short chapters and rich dialogue. You can fly from New York to LA and finish the whole book. It's about 60,000 words with chapters that feel manageable and satisfying.
"I know like for me when I'm reading fiction, I like to feel accomplished in what I've read. So I specifically wrote short chapters with more frequent chapters because I just feel people like to feel accomplished when they read."
Ever stayed up way too late trying to finish a chapter? π« Yeah, Lori gets it. That's why she wrote the book she'd want to read.
Give yourself grace and space. ποΈ
Lori Zoss knew herself well enough to know when she wasn't in the zone. When nothing was coming, she didn't force it. She'd write down what she wanted to accomplish in the next session, just a few phrases and then she'd walk away.
"If you're just sitting there and staring at the screen and creating a discipline that you have to stay and sit here, but nothing's coming, that's going to make it worse."
Come back with fresh eyes. It works.
Permission granted: take the break. The work will still be there tomorrow.
The hardest part of writing is starting. π
Lori Zoss says that once you're in the rhythm, you're in the rhythm. But that first step? That's the one that trips everyone up.
"I think anybody will tell you that, because once you're in the rhythm, you find that you're in the rhythm, but getting started and creating the discipline to write is imperative because you can have an idea, but it stays in the ether forever."
Her advice? Just start. Even if it's just phrases. Even if it's just 20 minutes. You can't edit a blank page.

You need a slice of cake for yourself. π°
We talk about this on Book Interrupted all the time, the idea that you have to take time for your own creative passions, or what are we even doing?
Lori Zoss took that slice at night, after her business day was done. She carved out time to write, even when life was busy. Even when she was tired. She gave herself the space to create.
She says the hardest part is getting started. Once you're in the rhythm, you're in the rhythm. But you have to give yourself permission to take that first step.
So, when do you take your slice of cake? ββ¨

Writing isn't just about creating stories, it's therapy. βοΈπ€
Lori Zoss says that when she started writing consistently, something shifted. She was a happier, more balanced entrepreneur. Why? Because she could take the frustrations of her day, the rough moments, the stress and pour them into her villain.
"While you are building this world that you hope people want to enter for a little bit, you also are kind of utilizing it to your advantage to kind of work out your own stuff."
So if you've ever felt like you need an outlet, maybe your creative project is exactly that. Lori wrote at night, after her business day was done, and it helped her process everything.
