MHC
Moschun Hostomel' Children (MHC) Organization trying to let children be healthy, happy and educated.
While being in Moschun I interviewed the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel village council Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk. Please watch the intyerview as it provides a better understanding of what is really happening in the area. Alternatively, you could read the reanscript below in both English and Ukrainian.
EN:
I am the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel village council Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk.
There was a gymnasium where very few students remained, and it became a branch of Lyceum number 1. Today, in Moschun now lives 63 children from 0 to 10 years old, they live directly in the community that returned back. And 48 children from 11 to 17 years old. that is, there is a great need to build an elementary school with a preschool department, since there are many small children and children aged 1st and 4th grade. Then children can take a school bus to school in Horyanka or to Lyceum number 1 in Hostomel, which is a major point for them. therefore we urgently need to have an elementary school of course.
Please tell us more about the buses that carry children to school
So, now the gostomel community has 3 school buses that we managed to get for the main institution, Lyceum number 1, which serves children living in Moschun, Horyanka, in the village of Ozera, from the branch they are brought to Hostomel to Lyceum number 1, and it also serves the territory of Hostomel itself. Since children live far away, outside the 2 kilometer zone of accessibility to school. We don't even have enough of these, just 3 buses, as today 1,700 children study at the Lyceum. We carry them in shifts, and there are 90 seats in total, we managed to do work with it, but in general we still need to work on having at least 3 more new buses.
You mentioned that there are 2000 children in total and the school can accommodate just 900, please tell us more about it.
Yes, Lyceum number 1 currently has 1,780 students, and the capacity of this institution is 900 students. before the war, the community entered the "big construction" program and a tender was already held. The community had to receive all the projects for completion to the Lyceum. this would partially solve the problem of the Glass Factory microdistrict and surrounding area. but in other microdistricts there are also 400, 200 children, in Horyanka 800 children who are forced to study in schools in Kyiv, since the school that exists today in Horyanka can accommodate a maximum of 170 children.
UA:
The war erupted in Ukraine on February 24 2021, resulting in a swift enemy advance towards Kiev. However, the town of Irpin stood strong and halted the invaders, albeit at the price of significant damage to 70% of its infrastructure.
By successfully repelling the enemy, Irpin earned the esteemed status of a heroic city. Presently, our focus lies in the crucial endeavor of rebuilding the social infrastructure, encompassing schools, kindergartens, sports facilities, and cultural establishments.
In the ongoing efforts to restore Irpin's buildings and infrastructure facilities, significant progress has been made, but there is still much work ahead. The focus now turns to the critical task of revitalizing schools and kindergartens, which remain in dire need of attention. Despite some renovations, a significant number of educational institutions lack essential bomb shelters, rendering them unsafe for conducting training and posing a risk to the children's well-being.
The issue extends beyond Irpin itself, as many schools and kindergartens in the surrounding villages and small towns have yet to be fully restored. Consequently, children are compelled to endure long daily journeys on school buses, covering substantial distances. Unfortunately, the scarcity of buses exacerbates the situation, greatly affecting their education, socialization and mental health.
In accordance with the law of Ukraine, it is mandated that every school and kindergarten must possess a bomb shelter during times of martial law. This requirement ensures the safety of students and enables the effective implementation of training procedures within these facilities. By adhering to this regulation, educational institutions can better prepare and protect their students in the event of any potential threats or emergencies.
A potential solution lies in the installation of bomb shelters within the restored schools. This measure would allow children to resume their education within their hometowns and villages, providing them with a sense of stability and a safer learning environment. By implementing these shelters, not only would the immediate safety concerns be addressed, but it would also foster a more conducive atmosphere for education and contribute to the overall well-being of the children.
The task of restoring schools and kindergartens, ensuring the availability of sufficient transportation, and integrating bomb shelters represents a crucial endeavor that requires concerted efforts from the local authorities, community members, and concerned organizations. By coming together to tackle these challenges, we can create a better future for the children of Irpin and its surrounding areas, providing them with access to quality education and a secure environment in which to thrive.

About me
In the face of adversity, it is often our inner strength and determination that guide us towards making a difference. Today, I want to share my story, a story of love for my homeland, Ukraine, and my unwavering commitment to support those affected by the ongoing war. My name is Kateryna Livinska, a Ukrainian living in Toronto, Canada, studying civil engineering and striving to bring hope and normalcy back into the lives of my fellow countrymen.
A Deep Connection
Born and raised in the beautiful city of Kyiv, Ukraine, I cherished my early years in a country filled with rich history and vibrant culture. These memories have shaped who I am today. At the age of 16, I relocated to Toronto, leaving behind my family, friends, and the place I called home. Little did I know that Ukraine would soon be caught in the grips of a devastating war.
A Worried Heart
The news of the war in Ukraine struck me like a thunderbolt, leaving me deeply worried and anguished. I watched helplessly from afar as my beloved country faced unimaginable challenges. As the conflict unfolded, my determination to make a difference grew stronger with each passing day.
A Call to Action
In the summer of 2022 and 2023, I made visits back to Ukraine. Witnessing the scale of destruction in cities like Irpin', Bucha, Ozera village, Hostomel, and Horyanka, I was both inspired by the resilience of the Ukrainian people and disheartened by the devastation caused by the war. The lack of proper infrastructure, particularly in schools and kindergartens, struck a chord within me.
A Focused Mission
With a burning desire to contribute to the rebuilding efforts, I decided to direct my attention towards addressing the pressing needs of educational institutions in the affected regions. Education is the foundation upon which a nation's future is built, and it is crucial to ensure that children have access to safe and reliable transportation and learning environments.
A Bus for Hope
My primary goal is to raise enough funds to purchase a school bus for the children of Moschun and other villages in the Hostomel region. The bus will enable them to travel to and from their educational institutions without hurdles, giving them the opportunity to continue their education despite the challenging circumstances.
Building Safe Havens
In addition to providing transportation, I am also striving to secure modular bomb shelters for schools and kindergartens in the area. These shelters will offer a sense of security and protection during times of heightened danger, allowing children to focus on their studies and play without constant fear.
A Call for Support:
No endeavor can succeed without a collective effort. I am reaching out to individuals, organizations, and communities who share my passion for helping Ukraine in its time of need. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of countless children and families affected by the war.
As I continue my studies in Toronto, my heart remains with Ukraine and its people. I am committed to playing my part in rebuilding a country scarred by conflict, one step at a time. By focusing on the pressing needs of educational institutions, I hope to bring a glimmer of hope and a brighter future to the children of Ukraine.
Join me on this journey of hope and resilience. Let us come together, raise our voices, and extend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Together, we can make a difference and rebuild a stronger Ukraine.

The Need for Bomb Shelters in Hostomel
The safety and well-being of students are paramount in educational institutions. Unfortunately, in the Hostomel community, the absence of bomb shelter facilities poses a significant obstacle. Natalia Borysivna Rokhmanyuk, the Head of the Education Department of the Hostomel city council, shared valuable insights regarding the challenges faced by Gymnasium Number 1 in the village of Ozera. We will delve into the importance of bomb shelters, the impact on education, and the community's collective efforts to provide a secure learning environment for all students.
The Hub of Education
Gymnasium Number 1, nestled in the village of Ozera, serves as a crucial educational institution with both a school and a preschool department. Unfortunately, the absence of bomb shelter facilities poses a significant barrier to organizing in-person education. This hindrance affects not only the students of the gymnasium but also students from Lyceum Number 2, located in a military village that is currently completely destroyed.
The Urgent Need for Bomb Shelters
Bomb shelters play a vital role in ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the wider community during times of potential threats or emergencies. Without the presence of bomb shelters, conducting in-person education becomes an insurmountable challenge. As such, the urgent need to assemble bomb shelters within Gymnasium Number 1 is essential to resume regular educational activities and foster a secure learning environment for all.
Providing Education Opportunities
Establishing bomb shelters within Gymnasium Number 1 would facilitate the education of students from the village of Ozera, including those attending the gymnasium and potentially students from Lyceum Number 2 during a second shift. This innovative arrangement would maximize resource utilization and provide an opportunity for a wider range of students to access education, promoting stability and continuity in their academic journeys.
Community Collaboration for a Secure Future
The Hostomel community recognizes the urgency of addressing the lack of bomb shelters in educational institutions. By fostering collaboration between local government bodies, concerned organizations, and community members, we can raise awareness and mobilize resources to meet this critical need. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of students, enabling them to pursue their education in a secure environment.
The absence of bomb shelters in Gymnasium Number 1 and other educational institutions in the Hostomel community poses a significant challenge. However, through collective efforts and a shared commitment to student safety, caring people, organizations and the community members can overcome this obstacle. Lets join hands, raise awareness, make donations and work towards assembling bomb shelters within educational institutions, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students in Hostomel and beyond.

Situation around educational institutions in Hostomel
In the aftermath of a devastating full-scale invasion, educational institutions in Hostomel, particularly Lyceum Number 2, have been profoundly affected. Tamara Sabluk, the director of Lyceum Number 2, shares the heart-wrenching impact of the destruction caused by the invasion. We will delve into the challenges faced by the educational community, the resilience shown in providing mixed education, and the collective hope for the complete restoration of Lyceum Number 2, where children's voices will once again resonate.
The Horrors of Destruction
Tamara Sabluk vividly describes the devastating aftermath of the invasion. Direct hits destroyed the very fabric of Lyceum Number 2, including the roof, offices, and the soul of the institution itself. The profound pain and loss experienced by the community are palpable, as they bear witness to the destruction left behind by these inhumane acts.
Adapting to Mixed Education
With over 500 children affected by the destruction, Lyceum Number 2 had to find a way to continue providing education. Primary School Number 1 of the Hostomel city council stepped up to accommodate these students, offering mixed education to ensure that they are not left behind. While efforts have been made to maintain continuity in education, the absence of their beloved Lyceum leaves a void in the hearts of the students and staff.
Restoring the Native Institution
The journey towards rebuilding Lyceum Number 2 is a challenging one, but the hope for complete restoration remains strong. Tamara Sabluk expresses the community's longing to rebuild their beloved institution, where the echoes of children's voices will once again fill the halls. With the support of the community and external assistance, the vision of a fully restored Lyceum Number 2 can become a reality.
The stories shared by Tamara Sabluk and the community members of Hostomel highlight the profound impact of the invasion on educational institutions. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of the community to ensure that education continues despite the challenges faced. As we stand together in solidarity, we can provide the necessary support and resources to rebuild Lyceum Number 2. Let us work towards the complete restoration of this native institution, so that the voices of the children can once again grace its walls, symbolizing the triumph of hope and resilience over the forces of destruction.

What we do and why?
Supporting Education and Safety: A Mission to help children of Ukraine
Our recent visit to Ukraine brought us to various communities, including Irpin, Bucha, Hostomel, Moschun village, Ozera village, Horyanka village, and others. Armed with our cameras and determination, we documented the challenges faced by schools and kindergartens in the region. Through interviews with school directors and the head of the Education Department of the Hostomel village council, we witnessed the genuine concern and passion of community members for the well-being of children. This blog highlights the pressing issues and our mission to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for the children of Ukraine.
1. The Plight of Schools and Kindergartens:
The education landscape in Ukraine's affected areas is marred by numerous challenges. Many schools and kindergartens have been destroyed, leaving children without access to quality education. Additionally, a significant number of these institutions lack the necessary bomb shelters, making them unsafe for children during times of martial law. Studying in-person under such obstacles would be a violation of Ukrainian law which further compounds the urgency to address these issues and ensure the safety of students.
2. Mobilizing Support and Funding:
In response to the critical situation, our team is committed to raising funds to address the pressing needs of schools and kindergartens.
Our goal is twofold:
-First, to provide additional buses for safe transportation of children to and from school,
ensuring that they have access to education without enduring long and arduous journeys.
-Second, we aim to install modular bomb shelters in the courtyards or basements of these
institutions, guaranteeing the safety of children during emergencies and complying with
regulations.
3. Joining Forces for Change:
We invite individuals who share our concern for the well-being and future of Ukrainian children to join us in this crucial mission. By coming together, we can make a difference in their lives and provide them with the joy and opportunities they deserve. Whether through donations, or spreading awareness, every contribution counts in creating a safe and nurturing environment for education.
4. A Ray of Hope:
Our collective efforts seek to give the children of Ukraine the chance to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe environment. By addressing the immediate challenges of transportation and bomb shelter provisions, we pave the way for a brighter future. Together, we can bring about lasting change, providing children with the opportunity to live a normal life and receive the education they need to fulfill their potential.
The challenges faced by schools and kindergartens in Ukraine's affected areas demand urgent attention and support. Bridging Educational Gaps: Addressing Capacity Challenges in Lyceum Number 1
Lyceum number 1 stands as a beacon of education and opportunity for the community it serves. However, with a current enrollment of 1,780 students exceeding its capacity of 900, the institution is facing significant challenges. We will explain the impact of overcrowding and the community's efforts to expand educational infrastructure. We will shed light on the "big construction" program, the need for additional projects, and the plight of children in other microdistricts, such as the Glass Factory micro-district and Horyanka, who are forced to seek education in schools in Kyiv.
1. Overcrowding at Lyceum Number 1:
The ever-increasing number of students at Lyceum number 1 has stretched the institution beyond its intended capacity. With 1,780 students currently enrolled, the strain on resources and facilities is evident. Overcrowded classrooms, limited space for extracurricular activities, and the compromised learning environment pose significant challenges to both students and educators.
2. The "Big Construction" Program:
Before the war, the community embarked on the ambitious "big construction" program aimed at expanding educational infrastructure. A tender was held, and completion projects were expected to be received for Lyceum number 1. The program offered hope for alleviating the capacity issues and catering to the needs of the Glass Factory microdistrict and its surrounding areas. But then the war started…
3. The Urgent Need for Additional Projects:
While the "big construction" program showed promise, it is crucial to receive all the projects for completion at Lyceum number 1. This would serve as a partial solution to the challenges faced by the Glass Factory microdistrict and its surrounding areas. However, it is equally important to address the needs of other microdistricts, such as those around with 400 and 200 children, and Horyanka with 800 children. The existing school in Horyanka can only accommodate a maximum of 170 children, leaving many students with no choice but to seek education in schools located in Kyiv.
4. Empowering Education in Microdistricts:
Expanding the educational infrastructure in microdistricts is imperative to ensure equitable access to quality education for all children. By constructing new schools or expanding existing ones, we can create learning environments that can accommodate the growing student population. This will reduce the burden on Lyceum number 1 and provide children with the opportunity to receive education closer to their homes.
The challenges faced by Lyceum number 1 in accommodating its current student population underscore the pressing need for additional projects and expansion of educational infrastructure. The "big construction" program offered hope, but times changed, and it is crucial to receive all the projects for completion. Furthermore, addressing the needs of children in micro-districts and Villages, such as the Glass Factory and Horyanka, is paramount. By investing in education and expanding infrastructure, we can ensure equitable access to quality education, alleviate overcrowding, and provide a conducive learning environment for all students.
Enhancing Accessibility: The Journey of School Buses in Gostomel Community
In the vibrant community of Hostomel, great strides have been made to improve accessibility to education. With the acquisition of three school buses, the community taken a significant step forward in ensuring that children residing in Moschun, Horyanka, and the village of Ozera can attend Lyceum number 1 in Hostomel. However, the journey towards accessibility is far from complete, as these three buses currently serve a staggering 1,700 students. Let us explain the impact of these buses, the challenges faced, and the continued need for additional transportation options.
1. Bridging the Distance:
The introduction of three school buses has been a game-changer for students living beyond the 2-kilometer zone of accessibility to school. By providing transportation from Moschun, Horyanka, and the village of Ozera, people ensured that these children have the opportunity to attend Lyceum number 1 and receive a quality education. The buses have become a lifeline, connecting distant communities and bringing education within reach.
2. Managing Capacity:
With a total seating capacity of 90, the three buses have been instrumental in accommodating the needs of the 1,700 students studying at Lyceum number 1. A shift system was implemented to maximize the utilization of these buses, but it remains a challenge to cater to the sheer number of students. There is a constant demand for additional transportation resources to ensure that every student has a seat and can reach the school safely and comfortably.
3. The Need for More Buses:
While the existing buses have alleviated some of the transportation challenges, the demand continues to outweigh the available resources. With 1,700 students relying on just three buses, it is evident that we must strive to acquire at least three more buses. By expanding our fleet, we can enhance the efficiency of the transportation system, reduce overcrowding, and provide a more convenient and reliable experience for the students.
4. Strengthening the Commitment:
Recognizing the importance of accessible education, the Hostomel community is committed to securing additional buses to meet the growing needs of its students. Through collaborative efforts and partnerships with local authorities, concerned organizations, and community members, we aim to bridge the gap and ensure that no child is left behind due to transportation constraints. By expanding our transportation infrastructure, we can empower our students and pave the way for a brighter future.
The introduction of three school buses in the Hostomel community has been a significant milestone, enabling children from distant areas to access education at Lyceum number 1. However, the challenges of accommodating 1,700 students with limited transportation resources persist. It is imperative that we continue our efforts to secure additional buses to provide a safer, more efficient, and inclusive transportation system. By doing so, we uphold our commitment to accessible education and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Addressing the Urgent Need for an Elementary School in Moschun
In the serene town of Moschun, a significant shift has occurred. The local gymnasium, once home to only a handful of students, has been transformed into a branch of Lyceum number 1. Presently, Moschun is home to 63 children aged 0 to 10, who have returned to their community, as well as 48 children aged 11 to 17. With a growing population of young residents, it has become imperative to address the pressing need for an elementary school with a preschool department. This blog aims to shed light on the importance of establishing such a school to cater to the educational needs of the children, particularly those in the 1st and 4th grades, and alleviate the challenges associated with transportation to distant schools.
1. Growing Population of Young Children:
Moschun is experiencing a remarkable resurgence as families return to their roots. The town now boasts 63 children between the ages of 0 and 10, who live directly within the community. These young minds require access to quality education that nurtures their development, prepares them for the future, and ensures a seamless transition into higher grades.
2. Need for an Elementary School:
With a significant number of small children and students in the 1st and 4th grades, Moschun urgently requires the establishment of an elementary school with a preschool department. This dedicated facility will cater to the specific educational needs of these age groups, providing them with a solid foundation for their academic journey. Having a local elementary school will not only enhance the educational opportunities for the children but also strengthen the sense of community.
3. Alleviating Transportation Challenges:
Currently, the children of Moschun face the challenge of traveling long distances to attend school in neighboring towns such as Horyanka or Lyceum number 1 in Hostomel. This dependence on school buses adds complexity to their daily routine and may affect their punctuality, overall well-being, and educational experience. By having a nearby elementary school, children can commute more conveniently, reducing travel time and allowing them to focus more on their studies and extracurricular activities.
4. Enhancing Community Cohesion:
An elementary school in Moschun will serve as a focal point for the community, bringing together families, teachers, and students in a shared pursuit of knowledge. It will create opportunities for collaboration, involvement, and active participation of community members in the education system. The school will foster a sense of belonging and unity, strengthening the social fabric of Moschun and promoting a collective commitment to the children's well-being.
The urgency of establishing an elementary school with a preschool department in Moschun cannot be overstated. The growing population of young children, the need for age-appropriate education, and the challenges associated with transportation all highlight the critical importance of this endeavor. By providing accessible and quality education within the community, Moschun can empower its children, foster a strong sense of community, and lay the foundation for a brighter future. It is crucial that local authorities, concerned organizations, and community members come together to realize this vision and ensure that every child in Moschun has access to an exceptional education.
