Project - New athletic and spirit branding for student and staff apparel
Hazelgrove Elementary in Surrey, BC reached out in need of a new athletic mark to replace their existing brand which had potential conflicts with copyrights. The new marks would be applied to student and staff apparel including hoodies, t-shorts, sweatpants and hats.
The new brand set needed to be instantly recognizable for younger students as well as be able to scale down for the smallest applications, such as hats, lanyards and badges.
Several mockup variations in the existing school colour system were presented, as well as alternate colour schemes. The final selected set features a two-toned wordmark centred by a stylized C in the shape of an active hurricane’s spiral. The bold and simplified typeface also allows for easy readability at the smallest sizes.

I’ve known my friend Mark Redman going on close to 20 years. He’s an avid hiker and an excellent photographer, and has captured some jaw-dropping shots of the Alberta wilderness. I highly encourage you to check his IG profile for some truly inspirational photos.
A short time ago when I got my studio up and running again, Mark sent me a message to say how he had used some of my logo work as inspiration for his personal adventure branding. The way I see it, if he wants to ape some of my design, then it should be a little more personalized. I’ve really enjoyed exploring the world of adventure branding and had some ideas in my head based on Mark’s photography and adventures.
I know Mark really liked some of the “camp badge” iconography I’d put together, so I created a version based around a large letter R as the primary shape, with mountains, open lakes and kayaks as the main features.
