Out for a walk this afternoon with my littles. Of course I had to collect some comfrey for medicinal uses. Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is known as "knitbone" for its ability to accelerate tissue regeneration and soothe inflammation. Its active compounds work to speed up the recovery of minor skin wounds, sprains, bruises, and joint pain. Also spotted this Great Blue Heron, so majestic.

On my walk back home, after dropping the kids to school, I decided to collect some Dame’s Rocket tops. Hesperis matronalis is an herbaceous flowering plant species in the brassicaceae family. As it grows it offers different aspects of the plant that you can enjoy, so my research has taught me. I will be cooking these up tonight to add to my dinner.

Walking with my kids the other day I really began to notice their recognition of wild edible plants. My youngest in all seriousness noted “Mommy, most people do not know that flowers can be food.” Of course I acknowledged that and said “yes, but we need to be careful of what we collect and how we use it.” I love these little exchanges.
