May 22 is the UN International Day for Biological Diversity. This year's theme "acting locally for global impact" is a very timely reminder, here at the Friends of Eagle Bluffs Forest, that meaningful action on biodiversity loss always begins at the community level. About 40% of open-net salmon farm sites in B.C. have already been removed so progress Is being made. But 60% are still operating.
The federal government made a promise to fully transition all marine factory salmon farms out. It’s time to ensure they finish the job.
Wild salmon support a real economy, from commercial fishing to sport fishing to tourism. Foreign-owned factory salmon farms have threatened these community-lifelines for too long.
You can email our Member of Parliament Stephanie McLean at [email protected].

🔎 A new investigation found Norwegian fish farms are polluting fjords with waste compared to raw sewage from millions of people.

There are Norway-based companies factory farming salmon in B.C. 💩

A important piece of wisdom from a wise man, Washington state author and climate journalist Dahr Jamal. In 2022, with Stan Rushworth, Jamal edited We Are the Middle of Forever: Indigenous Voices From Turtle Island On the Changing Earth, a collection of interviews and conversations with indigenous people about climate change. Highly recommended.

"The single biggest thing I learned was from an indigenous elder of Cherokee descent, Stan Rushworth, who reminded me of the difference between a Western settler mindset of “I have rights” and an indigenous mindset of “I have obligations.” Instead of thinking that I am born with rights, I choose to think that I am born with obligations to serve past, present, and future generations, and the planet herself." - Dahr Jamail
This quote hit me so hard. 💘
