The costume design by the incredible Beverley Kobelsky really helped me in this process of discovering the many facets of this Lady M. The lines and cuts are strong and crisp- they angle, cross, and wrap in all directions. The fabric is practical, soft and breathable. My favourite piece is the necklace which has an organic and natural look to it. It is both strangely elegant and chaotic. Soft and rough. The ‘jewel’ is a partial skull of a raven which was made with a 3D printer. It is so detailed I had to ask if it was real when I first saw it.

In my mind it is a sort of talisman for Lady M. She has one and so does Macbeth. The costume department also made an extra one so that at the top of show I could be making one.

In my mind, in the play, Lady M made them all… the one she is making at the top of the show represents the child they lost, the duties and responsibilities she feels she failed at. As she weaves it together she is determined to somehow make up for these failures.

When I set out it was really important to me to try and figure out what brought Lady M to this point in her life and what she feels justifies her actions - the beautiful costume work of Beverley, @borkulon, @jeff.chief, @kihiwpilon helped me in this process more than words can say.

I love this about theatre- what tells the story is so much more than the few people you see on stage. There are so many incredible artists involved in a production. From the costumes, to the sets and props, to the lights, to the sound, to the choreography, stage management, the director… There is a whole community behind the scenes pouring their hearts into the play.

Effort
The only thing in my garden that thrived this year was basil, so I made pesto. I looooooove pesto.

I had never made it before. In practical terms, it isn’t hard to make, but it does require a bit of time to pick all of the leaves of basil off of the stems. Today I picked off 5 packed cups of basil leaves and it resulted in 2 ice cube trays of pesto. HAH!

I enjoyed it, but it reminded me… next time I am at the farmer’s market or at a craft show or buying local to not look at a price and think, ‘wow that’s expensive!’ But to honour that someone took the time and effort to make this product.

A friend and I used to sell items at craft shows before and we had people come into the booth and say, “Wow, that’s expensive.” Which is laughable because many of the items were under $15. Or they would say, “Oh, we could make that.”

Of course they could make it! But it made me want to say- Do you want to source the materials? Come up with the pattern and design? Take the time to put it all together?

And maybe they did want to do all of those things. I hope they did, I hope they had fun, and I hope they learned to appreciate the time and effort that went into making the ones they saw back at that craft show.

I will try and remember this and apply it to my own words and actions next time I am looking at someone else’s efforts.

In the meantime… mmmmm time to make pasta for my pesto... nom nom nom!

Day 67
I have this quilt. My Grandma Olive made it for me when I was a child. Now it lays on my child’s bed.
Over the years threads have been lost. I have been meaning to sew them and try to repair it but keep putting it off or forgetting.
Tonight I decided to begin that process. I decided to hand sew it. And to whipstitch it. It’s a bit messy.
A few times i sewed it messy on purpose. Repair work can be messy. Life is messy. As we decide what goes where- as we patch ideas and thoughts together.
It’s not finished, it will likely take time to find all the little spots that need some love.

Today I choose to reflect on the past and how to do better in the future 🧡

This morning I was able to join a group of artists reading the TRC’s Call to Action. So many of them are so achievable and they have not been met.

Today I will write some letters to elected officials. And try to figure out where I can be of real service and how to support my Indigenous friends. I am going to order orange shirts from @wanuskewingiftshop for my family (100% of the profits from our orange t-shirt sales to @IRSSurvivor Indian Residential School Survivors Society). I think I will also plant some flowers.

I would love to hear your ideas and personal calls to action, please comment or send me a dm. 🧡

I decided to record my lines and cues in voice memos so that I can work kn them while working in the yard or house. If you live in the Saskatoon area- come check out the new site and the show!! #ladym #shakespeare #rehearsedlines #macbeth

Today was the last class of the 4wk art journaling session through @il_saskatoon and funded by @universityofsaskatchewan College of medicine Division of Social Accountability. Today we made space to discuss the 215 children’s bodies found, reconciliation, being an advocate and ally.
We explored creating a piece around a quote that held meaning for us. This is the beginning of mine. 18 out of 215 hearts cut so far from images of nature.
