Muslim Youth Leadership Lab

AUG 15-16, 2026

This year, in partnership with York University's Islamophobia Hub, we are recruiting Canada's best young leaders to audition
a project they are working on that challenges Islamophobia and pushes for human rights change, either locally or beyond.

If your project is approved, we will help you build and fund it at this year's Muslim Youth Leadership Lab.

Make sure to apply today!

Hope to see you all there!

Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, is once again calling for an outright genocide in Lebanon.

The invasion of Lebanon by the IDF is illegal. It has no basis in international law, and must stop.

But Minister Ben Gvir, who controls powerful segments of the Israeli public safety and security establishment, is calling for genocide.

Canada, which has sanctioned Ben Gvir, must condemn this utterly insane and disgusting proclamation.

And we must impose broader sanctions, including on settlement products, as the Israeli government shows no signs of changing their policy of murder and slaughter.

“This park is not for Islam!”

We are deeply disturbed by a recent incident inside a public park in Winnipeg, Manitoba where a Muslim man was praying, only to be accosted by someone who hurled Islamophobic abuse towards him.

The man also made several hateful threats.

This unfortunately is yet another example of the rise in anti-Muslim incidents across Canada, which can take many forms.

In this case, someone felt comfortable and emboldened enough to threaten a praying Muslim in broad daylight.

We urge all leaders to stand up with community members to build a plan that stems this rising tide of Islamophobia.

As Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, moves toward Royal Assent, we recognize both the urgency and the importance of strengthening Canada’s response to hate-motivated violence.

As we highlighted in our submissions before both House of Commons and Senate committees, Canadian Muslims understand the cost of hate far too well. We have experienced some of the deadliest acts of hate-motivated violence in Canada’s recent history, including the terrorist attack on a Muslim family in London and the mass shooting at the Quebec City mosque.

We are also disappointed that neither the House of Commons nor the Senate addressed concerns relating to freedom of religion and freedom of expression. Despite repeated calls from faith communities and civil liberties organizations, no amendments were adopted after the removal of the good faith religious exemption—a Bloc Québécois amendment which was adopted at committee without adequate consideration of its harmful implications. While the government did implement amendments to address some of these concerns, parliament missed an opportunity to provide improved clarity regarding the protection of good faith religious expression through the bill’s “for greater certainty” clause.

Combating hate and protecting fundamental freedoms should not be mutually exclusive. Canadians deserve laws that effectively address hatred and violence while fully respecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

We will be closely monitoring the application of this law.

Prime Minister Carney stated that the war in Iran, which has cost thousands of innocent lives, including over a hundred young girls in a school, was “worth it.”

Numerous international experts and analysts have characterized the latest war on Iran as pointless, and that preventing nuclear proliferation has been a rhetorical position put forward by the Trump administration. There is no clear evidence to back such claims outside of Trump’s words, to prove that such a goal has been accomplished.

Like the illegal 2003 Iraq invasion before it, the current Iran war has destabilized the region, damaged economies, and resulted in many civilian casualties.

Furthermore, numerous polls have also indicated that most Canadians are opposed to this war, and are in favour of Canada standing against the Trump regime.

A war that needlessly costs thousands of civilian lives, halts the global economy, and is not supported by the majority of Canadians makes us question how exactly this was “worth it.”

An important reminder from NDP federal leader Avi Lewis, following the latest remarks by PM Carney at the G7 Summit, that Canada must implement real, robust sanctions on the Government of Israel, particularly as the invasion of Iran and Lebanon continue unabated.

These steps must also be taken as Palestinians continue to face mass violence and threats of annexation.

Such steps include the sanctioning of Netanyahu and his entire cabinet, as well as a full ban on imports produced by illegal Israeli settlement entities.

This week, our NCCM team members, partners, and volunteers delivered over 1,000 meals across the country to the needy within several communities.

From Toronto, to Ottawa, to Calgary, to Winnipeg, to Halifax, various community groups and members came together in the spirit of Islam and Eid to feed those in need.

Food insecurity and economic uncertainty have only exacerbated poverty across Canada. We hope to carry out bigger and larger initiatives to address these issues in the coming years.

We want to thank all our partners and all caterers and restaurants who worked with us to deliver so many meals!

As the days of Muharram have fallen upon us, and we get closer to the Day of Ashura, we begin this Islamic new year in reflection and in remembrance. This month carries powerful legacies of unwavering commitments towards fighting against oppression and injustice.

Among those are the legacy of Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, who stood against the tyranny of Pharaoh and led his people to freedom, and many in our community are marking the legacy of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet and his family, peace be upon them, whose sacrifices remain a symbol of resistance against injustice.

This is a time for us all to renew our intentions in the fight for justice. These legacies call upon us to reflect on the state of our world today, where millions continue to face war, in Palestine, in Sudan, in Lebanon, and in Iran.

It is a time to remind ourselves that all must come together at this time to resist the rising tides of hate and oppression across Canada and the world.

It is deeply disappointing to see the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) cancel this important workshop on anti-Palestinian racism within our schools and communities.

Anti-Palestinian hate and racism has been a rising problem across Canada, including in schools where valedictorians' speeches have been altered because they mention Palestinian human rights.

Racist graffiti have been found inside school bathrooms telling Arabs and Palestinians to "go home." Students wearing the Palestinian keffiyah scarf have been intimidated and scolded.

The fact that we aren’t allowed to talk about it is absurd.

Canceling such workshops, particularly at a time of rising anti-Palestinian racism, amount to a clear example of erasure.

It is deeply disappointing and disturbing to see that the World Zionist Organization, a group that helps the government of Israel in illegal settlement expansion, was somehow left off the list of entities to be sanctioned by Canada.

All organizations that help expand illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land must be sanctioned. Canada must align with this basic aspect of international law.

Groups that facilitate the growth of these illegal settlements are breaking both international law and Canadian policy by expanding a massive security risk in the region.

Canada must close these loopholes and sanction all such groups, along with all illegal settlement imports.
