As the weather warms up, rescues across Ontario see an increase in abandoned guinea pigs, rabbits, and other small animals.

Many people believe these animals can survive outdoors if released. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Domestic guinea pigs and rabbits rely on humans for food, shelter, and safety. When abandoned, they face predators, starvation, dehydration, disease, and extreme weather.

Small animals are not disposable pets. They deserve the same lifelong commitment we expect for cats and dogs.

Please share this post to help educate others and prevent animal abandonment this summer.

Adoption Announcement! 📣

Charlie came to us in February 2026 after being surrendered to the rescue. When he arrived, he had one of the worst cases of mites we have seen. (Swipe to the last video to see). His long coat required multiple medicated baths, several rounds of ivermectin, and lots of TLC to help him recover.

After weeks of treatment and care, Charlie was finally mite-free and ready to find his forever family.

In April 2026, Charlie met Archie, and it was love at first sight. Their bond formed almost instantly and was one of the easiest boar matchups we have ever seen at the rescue. Watching them choose each other was truly special.

We are so happy that Charlie’s journey from rescue to recovery has led him to his perfect home and his perfect brother.❣️

💕 Adoption Update: Winnie 💕

Winnie came to the rescue in 2023 with her sister Lemmie. In February 2026 her sister passed and Winnie found herself back at GPRO. With two missing teeth and needing a friend, we later matched her with a baby girl we named Baby Lemmie in honor of her sister.

This past April, Winnie found her forever home alongside Baby Lemmie and Laura, creating the sweetest little herd of three. 🐹🐹🐹

We’re so happy to see Winnie thriving with her new sisters and loving family. ❤️

📢 Message to the GPRO Community

We would like to provide an update on the current state of our operations.

Due to unforeseen air conditioning challenges, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily pause all guinea pig surrenders until Fall 2026. The health, safety, and comfort of the guinea pigs currently in our care must remain our top priority, and we want to ensure they can comfortably navigate the summer months.

Over the next few weeks, we will be reaching out to foster families we have worked with in the past to help transition some of our current guinea pigs into foster homes. This will allow us to continue providing the highest standard of care while we work through these challenges.

We understand this may be disappointing for those seeking surrender assistance, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

We look forward to reopening surrenders in the fall and continuing our mission of helping guinea pigs in need.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Guinea Pig Rescue Ottawa and the animals in our care. 💛

Tiny lives, big rescue story 💛

Three healthy babies have officially been born safely in foster care alongside their mama, P**a 🐹✨

Our new mama Pippa was one of 3 pregnant females rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding situation involving 12 guinea pigs. Shortly after arriving in care, we discovered she was pregnant with 4 babies. Sadly, one baby was stillborn, but we are so grateful these 3 little ones arrived safely and are doing well with their mama. 🥺

That now brings our total to 17 guinea pig lives saved from this hoarding situation. Every rescue matters, and every life deserves a second chance. 🫶

Next up, we’ll be bringing another rescued mama, Raccoon, to the vet to see how many babies she may be expecting. Please keep her in your thoughts 💕

Thank you to everyone supporting rescue, fostering, and adoption. Stories like this are only possible because of compassionate people like you.

Meet Babu 🤍

Babu came to us with one of the worst cases of mites we’ve ever seen. After lots of care and treatment, he’s now a healthy, happy boy who loves cuddles. 🐹✨

Now he’s looking for a forever home, ideally with another single male guinea pig looking for a friend. 💛

Send us an email if you think your pig could be a good match for Babu!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Twilight 🩷

Twilight had been struggling with health issues for some time, and at 6 years old, she passed peacefully in the home of her loving foster mom. We are so grateful she was able to spend her final days surrounded by comfort, care, and love.

Her foster mom went above and beyond for her, and Twilight was truly cherished every step of the way. She will be deeply missed.

Peanut is now adjusting to this loss. While she remains with her foster mom and is not alone, she is looking for her forever home and the right companion to call her own.
