Scientists Turned a Mosquito’s Bloodsucking Mouth Into a Tiny High Resolution 3D Printer!
Cao’s group had been working on high-resolution 3D printing for biomedical applications, trying to build delicate scaffolds that could one day host living cells. But even the finest commercially available nozzles—at 35 micrometers wide and about $80 each—were too large, too fragile, and too expensive.
The female Aedes aegypti, in particular, relies on a remarkably fine proboscis to pierce skin and draw blood. It’s narrow—about 20 micrometers in diameter, nearly twice as thin as the best man-made nozzles—and surprisingly robust, able to withstand pressures up to 60 kilopascals:

This New Shape Breaks an ‘Unbreakable’ 3D Geometry Rule!
Can you drill a hole in a cube that an identical cube could fall through? Prince Rupert of the Rhine first asked this question in the 17th century, and he soon found out the answer is yes.
Later, mathematicians found more and more three-dimensional shapes that eventually came to be called “Rupert”: they are able to fall through a straight hole in an identical shape. In 2017 researchers formally conjectured that all 3D shapes with flat sides and no indents, known as convex polyhedrons, are Rupert. Nobody could prove them wrong—until now:

On Wednesday (Sept. 10), researchers presented a study that describes how Perseverance found intriguing minerals on the western edge of Jezero Crater, in the clay-rich, mudstone rocks of a valley called "Neretva Vallis."
"When we see features like this in sediment on Earth, these minerals are often the byproduct of microbial metabolisms that are consuming organic matter," Joel Hurowitz, a planetary scientist at Stony Brook University in New York and lead author of the new study, said during a NASA press conference held on Wednesday.
