It's Cy Twombly's birthday! 〰 The abstract painter, sculptor, and photographer was born in 1928.
Twombly is best known for his scribbles and smudges like the ones here in Untitled (1964/84). The artist began this painting in 1964, returning to complete it 20 (!) years later. Among the graphite scrawls and swooping white lines, Twombly hid written phrases. In the canvas's upper-left region, a fragment of a sentence reads "a shadow of the dream," which appears in the writings of both Shakespeare and John Keats.
