Once upon a time I signed a recording contract with a small label and gave them an unreleased album my old band made. The record was accidentally leaked online three months early, the radio/pr campaign flopped, the release flopped… it felt like we tossed the whole album and a bunch of cash in the garbage and it was devasting.

After many missteps, I realized this label deal wasn’t going to work out and I terminated my contract. I felt like I was taking ten steps backwards.
The album came down, I stepped away from performing and releasing content and tried to get my feet back under me. Being signed felt like the “big break” I was waiting for but it turned out to be a failed experiment and not only was my ego bruised up, I started to believe that maybe it was my only chance at finding a place in the industry because maybe I was just too soft or timid or naive or or or.

Obsessing over the business of it all made me forget how special the music itself is and that’s been the hardest part to come to terms with.
Luckily it’s the thing most in my control to change. So now, ten months later, the album is going back up. It’s called KODAE, the name of the old band, and it was made with a whole lotta talented folks.

My favourite song on the EP is called Daydreamer and it reminds me how important it is to keep the dream alive amidst all the false starts and detours we take. Every “failed experiment” or redirection only brings us closer to where we’re meant to be 💛
