Samuel Trosow is London City Councillor for Ward 6. My name is Samuel Trosow and I am running for London City Council in Ward 6.

I am a professor at Western University in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Information & Media Studies, and believe I am well qualified to represent the area that surrounds the university running from Oxford to the Thames, and Wonderland to Adelaide. I see housing affordability and the environmental crisis as crucial issues that must be creatively addressed by the next council, and I look for

Friends,

I cannot thank you enough for your trust in electing me as your next Councillor for Ward 6 .

We have a lot to do together. We have issues in our ward from housing, to town and gown, to homelessness, too issues of safety and policing, transit, and of course affordability.

I campaigned on a platform of tackling our wards and cities toughest issues, and I commit to you today that over the next four years I will work tirelessly to make Ward 6 and our city a better place to live.

I want to thank everyone who worked on my campaign , the many people who endorsed me, the students and friends who volunteered, and especially my wife Marie Blosh without whom I could not have succeeded.

To my opponents in this race I want to thank you for your willingness to serve our ward and our city. It is through your willingness to serve, and the service of all the other wonderful people who put their names forward, that we have the chance to build a vibrant and prosperous London for everyone.

To my fellow Councillors and Mayor who have been elected tonight I offer my sincerest congratulations and I look forward to serving the people of London with you.

In closing I would like to say that we have a lot of work ahead of us. The budget deliberations start almost right away. But during this work I will be reaching out to my fellow ward six residents to get your feedback on where we should focus our efforts. I cannot do this work without you.

Again my sincerest and heartfelt thanks to the people of Ward Six who have given me the privilege of serving you as your Councillor.

Sam Trosow
Ward 6 City Councillor-Elect

A Local Response for Sustainable Development
London’s response to the worsening climate emergency must be implemented with sensible, bold, and evidence-based policies. We have underutilized spaces that should be used for new developments in the core. High office vacancy rates, vacant storefronts, and the prevalence of temporary surface parking lots all contribute to the under-utilization of the core. We have ample space to grow and should not push further into greenspace for new developments. There is a long way to go in bringing emissions under control, protecting London’s woodlots and canopy, and improving our active and public transportation infrastructure. I support the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign and have signed Municipal Candidate’s Climate Pledge.

Engaging University issues. Ward 6 residents know the challenges of living in the near-campus neighbourhood, as we see the same recurring issues year after year. The city must improve its efforts to work with the University, student groups, residents’ associations and rental property owners, many of whom are absentee. It must be an ongoing year-round effort, and must address the ongoing conditions in the affected neighbourhoods. Code enforcement for noise, trash, lawn-parking and blight needs to be improved.

Housing Affordability - a Growing Crisis
The average one-bedroom apartment cost in London is $1,430, that’s a 14% increase in one year. Tenants are also facing decreased services and deteriorating conditions. All Londoners deserve safe, secure, and fair housing but the city’s code enforcement efforts have been lax. I will work to address these issues through programs such as RentSafe and aggressively advocate for those most affected by out-of-control rents and poor housing conditions.

We need a aafer Ward 6 for everyone!
Too many residents have been affected by theft, property crime, and vandalism in the last few years. And homelessness, addiction and mental health issues are increasing every day. We must support our neighbours and work with the police in addressing these issues. But we must also be better at listening to and working with all civilian front-line workers. The approach of the last few years needs to be replaced with a new path forward.
