Cold season is fast approaching.
While most asphalt businesses slow down, some make good use of this time to improve their business.
Here are a few things you can work on during the off-season:
Sell the services that still work: Potholes get worse all winter and property managers carry the liability. Cold patch goes down in any weather. Infrared repair works too, it just needs longer to heat. Emergency trip hazard fixes are fast jobs that keep you in front of clients.
Pre-sell your spring schedule: Reach out to last year's customers now. Walk the lots you worked this year, take photos of what winter is opening up, and turn that into a quote before anyone else calls.
Fix your marketing while you have time: Update the website, refresh the Google profile, ask happy customers for reviews, sort your before and after photos.
Tune up your equipment: Every breakdown in spring started as something you "meant to look at" before the end of the season. Flush pumps and hoses, service melters and sprayers, replace what's worn, and store material above freezing.
Clean up your numbers: Look at last year's jobs. Which ones made money and which ones didn't? Fix your pricing and your quote templates before the season starts, not during it.
Winter isn't downtime. It's the part of the year that decides how the next one goes.

Cracks filled this month have to survive a Canadian winter.
Most failed crack filling jobs have these in common:
Sealing over dirty cracks: Filler bonds to clean sidewalls, not to dirt. Crack sealer over a crack full of debris and vegetation is a band-aid on Vaseline. Blow it out, clean a half-inch deep, and let your filler do its job.
Filling cracks that are too wide: Hot pour crack sealer is for cracks up to a half inch. Wider than that and the filler just settles inside the crack, leaving a gap for water. Use a top patch material or mastic for anything wider. If you do have to use hot pour, plan on multiple passes to bring it up to the surface.
Overheating the material: Pushing your melter past the manufacturer's recommended temperature breaks down the rubberized binders in the sealer. It looks fine going in, but it gets brittle fast and cracks again within a season. Watch your temps and keep the material in the working range.
Filling wet or cold cracks: Moisture stops the filler from bonding, and fall mornings leave dew in the crack long after the surface looks dry. A heat lance clears debris, dries the crack, and warms the sidewalls in one pass. Pour right after, since cracks pick up moisture again fast.
Clean it, size it right, and keep it in the right temperature range. That's the difference between crack fill that lasts and a callback you don't get paid for.

Crews have enough to worry about. A supplier that follows through shouldn't be one of them.

Prep is the step most people skip. It's also the reason most asphalt jobs fail early.
Crack filling, sealcoating, striping, patching: different materials, same rule.
They bond to what's underneath, and if what's underneath is dirt, the bond won't last.
Your work is only as good as the surface prep.
Clean it first.
Always.
