If you’ve ever wondered why it’s so expensive to hire a legitimate hvac technician that operates legally, the safety authority that governs part of our industry just charged us $368 to change our company name from Bowler Heating and Air Conditioning to Bowler Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. This is on top of the $478.40 that is charged on an annual basis. Once every 3 years we’re audited to make sure we’re doing things properly and safely, which is important and necessary. Their hourly rate is $135/hr plus tax and can include driving time. Admittedly their job is at times difficult, time-consuming and not fun, but I can’t help but wonder where all the money goes?

Regardless, this is one of the many reasons hiring an hvac professional costs so much. The safety authority performs the necessary job of ensuring “technicians” and so-called “trunk slammers” don’t kill people, or burn down houses and we all have to pay them something to do so.

Filter check everyone! It's a bit overdue, but be sure to check them before the ac is turned on this year.

For those in the Nepean area, enbridge is offering a home energy rebate of up to $2100. If you can cut your overall gas energy costs by 25-50% you're eligible. This can be done with work on insulation, windows, drain water heat recovery, air sealing, furnace or hot water tank replacement, etc... If your home is old, drafty and your furnace and hot water tank are ancient, this may be the time to do renovations. Pm me or call if you're curious 613-769-0490.

A brand new product is coming as an add-on to your annual furnace maintenance. This detailed fan cleaning is perfect for those with allergies and those just generally concerned about their homes air. It's a brand new fan cleaning and disinfecting treatment that gets into every corner of your fan. Check out the pictures below!

Filter check! Winters going to be getting colder and furnaces will be working hard. Be sure to help them by changing your filter

Filter check! Summers in full swing and dirty furnace filters can lead to expensive repairs down the line

05/20/2015

Check your filters everyone! A couple of people have had problems with their acs because of blocked filters and bad airflow so make sure they're clean!

05/07/2015

Ac maintenance season is here! So here's a little before and after on a 4 year old unit that was never maintained. This was what it looked like under the grill that I took off. The customer noted it immediately sounded much quieter after the cleaning was done. Which is a sign of a blocked coil, as well as running inefficiently. Be sure to book your maintenance! Call 614-769-0490.

The winter- summer switch. With the change in seasons comes the change in hvac. Here are a few things that can be missed when switching your system over. First of all, if you have a cover on your ac, take it off. Second, if you have a humidifier, turn it off by changing your humidistat setting to off. Third, if you have a humidifier close off the round ductwork that goes into it. Fourth, make sure that the breaker for the ac is in the on position. Finally, check your filter to make sure it's clean! Those are a few of the things people can miss when switching things over. Happy air conditioning!

Filter check! Make sure they're nice and clean to maximize airflow and increase the lifespan of your furnace!

This happens all the time so I thought it might be good to remind people to remove the thermostat from the wall when painting. It saves you from having to get everything out and repaint when the thermostat gets changed. Some old thermostats were massive and there are no new thermostats that cover the wall completely.

10/16/2014

Filter check!!! It's going to get cold again soon. Make sure your furnace filter is clean and ready and to go. Also, if your furnace maintenance has not been looked after yet this year, be sure to call at 613-769-0490 for your $70.00 complete care maintenance. It's the only way to know that your furnace is running efficiently and most importantly, safely.

09/12/2014

It's getting cold out there! Be sure to check your filters to make sure they're clean and ready to go.

Also be sure that your furnace maintenance has been done this year. If it hasn't be sure to call at 613-769-0490. One technician I work with noticed this crack (the white stuff coming thru is where to look) at one of his maintenances. If it wasn't spotted early on, it would have led to damage to more components and an expensive repair later on. Oh yes, and a likelihood that the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide from the exhaust would have gotten into the home.

07/21/2014

Filter check! Be sure to take a look at them. A clogged filter can cause you to get no airflow, no cooling, and turn your AC into a giant messy block of ice that leaks all over the floor and cause damage to your system. Have a look and make sure they're clean!

06/04/2014

Two posts in one. One it's time to check your filters and make sure they're clean. If they're filthy, your airflow in the home won't be as good, and in extreme cases, it can even turn the indoor portion of your AC into a gigantic block of ice. Be sure to check it before you turn it on!

That being said it's maintenance season again. I'm currently booking AC maintenances as well as furnace maintenances. Call 613-769-0490 to have yours maintained and make sure it's running like it should. Lack of maintenance can cause all sorts of problems down the line. It's good to catch these things ahead of time before they get too expensive to reasonable repair.

A little before and after picture comparison. An average blower motor after a few years of missing maintenance. This is what blows the air through the home!

It's been a very long winter here everyone. Just a reminder to make sure your filters are clear and clean as we get through the last little bit of this winter.

Every 2 months I like to remind people to check their filters to make sure that they're ok. Every filter lasts a different length depending on what your house is like and which you've bought. Be sure to check it to make sure it's clean, and replace it if it isn't! Likely your systems haven't been working much lately, so the filter hasn't had to either, hence the late late reminder.

For those that have already had their annual maintenance, be sure to go pick up the appropriate size written on your paperwork

A good reminder as to why AC maintenance can be important. This could be the inside of your ductwork.

Which leads to another thought. Before calling for a costly repair, check the following
- Do the batteries in the thermostat need changing?
- Is the thermostat switched to the proper mode? "Heat" or "cool".
- Is the breaker off?
- Is the furnace switch off? This is usually located at the bottom of the stairs.
- Is my filter clean?
- Are my exhaust and intakes clear? They would look like the picture on the previous post.

01/25/2013

Before calling for service, be sure to check that your vents are clear. In this case, they needed to service to make sure the problem wouldn't happen again. But, they could've checked it first to get the heat going before I came to look at it

I can't stress the importance of proper maintenance enough. A customer yesterday had just moved in and had an issue with their furnace. The furnace was over-heating and not giving proper exhaust pressure. Why? A dirty filter, and a clogged drain. The system backing up also revealed the need for a new exhaust motor due to a worn gasket. The dripping of condensate also nearly caused the failure of the control board since it was dripping directly on some of the wiring connected to the board.

Get your maintenance done!

11/15/2012

In the case of the customer below, with the cracked heat exchanger, they decided to replace their furnace with a Payne high efficiency furnace with 2 stages of gas pressure and a very efficient ECM motor. Very nice.

11/15/2012

I just wanted to share something with those who might want to know. This is an example of a cracked heat exchanger. If you look on the right side towards the top, it's the darker brown line. When this happens to your furnace, there is a chance that it could be releasing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air. If a technician sees this, the appliance must be shut off and the situation must be corrected quickly.

However, like in any field, there are technicians who are less than honest and will say there is a crack in hopes of getting commission on a sale. If you're worried that the technician might be less than honest, DO NOT be afraid to ask to see the crack! It should look like the picture below.

Should I rent or own my hot water system? Short answer: If you plan on living in your current residence for 5 or more years, Yes, definitely. If you'd like to know why, call or text 613-769-0490. Or feel free to message me on my page.

10/15/2012

Approximately 29% of the furnace maintenances performed this year had a gas leak within the house!
21% of the furnace maintenances performed had various issues that the homeowner would not have noticed without having a furnace maintenance done.

One particular homeowner had 3 gas leaks, one of which was at the meter.

It makes you wonder how many technicians actually do the proper testing on their gas connections.
