🎭TOMMY
Age: 20s–40s
Male or Masculine presenting
Any race/ethnicity
DESCRIPTION:
Tommy is a closeted small-town local who has spent years perfecting the art of invisibility. They are cautious, funny, and self-deprecating, often using humor to deflect fear. In The Closet, Tommy finds a space where they don’t have to play “normal,” and over the course of the play begins to soften, open up, and take emotional risks.
ARC:
Starts as a watcher on the edge of the room — jacket always on, exits planned. By the end, Tommy arrives openly, dressed with intention, holding someone’s hand. Their journey is subtle but powerful: a portrait of late-blooming courage.
ACTING NOTES:
This role requires strong comedic timing and emotional vulnerability.
🎭DAD
Age: 30s–60s
Male
Any race or ethnicity / Preferably BIPOC
DESCRIPTION:
Dad is Sky’s father - rigid, traditional, and deeply uncomfortable with uncertainty. He believes structure and control equal safety, and that q***rness is a phase or influence that can be corrected. His hostility comes from fear, not cruelty.
ARC:
Dad enters the story defensive and dismissive, framing Sky’s identity as confusion and rebellion. Through confrontation with Sky, the group, and Raymond, his shift in mindset is gradual, restrained, and realistic - not a sudden change, but the beginning of change.
ACTING NOTES:
This role demands restraint and realism. Dad should feel like someone the audience recognizes - not a villain, but a parent whose love is tangled in fear.
🎭COUNCIL CHAIR
Age: 30s–70s
Any gender
Any race/ethnicity
DESCRIPTION:
The Council Chair is calm, procedural, and deeply invested in keeping the peace; they initially frame the attack/conflict as “unfortunate” or a “misunderstanding” trying to maintain order and for sake of appearances.
ARC:
Throughout the town hall scene, the Council Chair is confronted with stories they cannot ignore. While not becoming an activist, they are moved enough to take a stand against violence and permit The Room to exist.
ACTING NOTES:
This role works best when played neutral and grounded. The Chair should not feel cruel or heroic - just human, cautious, and ultimately capable of listening. Small seeds of empathy creep through in the end.
🎭PARENT / CITIZEN
Age: 20’s-70’s
Any gender identity
Any race/ethnicity
DESCRIPTION:
This role represents an ordinary townsperson. A parent, teacher, or neighbor who enters the story unsure, conflicted, or silent. They are not overtly hateful, but have benefited from staying quiet.
ARC:
During the town council scene, this character finds the courage to speak up. Their support marks a turning point, showing that change doesn’t always come from loud voices - sometimes it comes from everyday people.
ACTING NOTES:
This is a smaller but vital role. The actor should bring sincerity and emotional truth. Often cast as a doubling role with other ensemble roles.

🏳️🌈🎬 “THE CLOSET” 🎬🏳️🌈
The Closet is a volunteer-based q***r theatrical production raising funds for LGBTQ+ organizations, services & programs. The story centers on a hidden sanctuary beneath a small-town shop and the community that must decide to stand together after a violent hate-motivated attack on their drag matriarch.
🏳️🌈
We are building a fully volunteer-run q***r community production, and we’re seeking passionate, reliable people to join our behind-the-scenes team. No professional experience required — just dedication, creativity, and a willingness to learn. 🎭
