I lived 18 years in Newfoundland, and I continue to provide updates, 5 years after moving to Alberta. If you're easily offended, you may not want to follow me

I may provide social commentary, or humour, about things other than the weather.

Snowfall amounts from the latest dump:

Victoria, BC 21 cm
St Johns Airport 18 cm
Paradise 17 cm
CBS 16 cm

This brings the season total to approximately 496 cm at YYT. You should see at least 4 cm more Sunday night bringing you to the first winter with at least 500 cm since 2002-03.

04/03/2026

St. John's Airport is currently sitting at 477.8 cm of snow this winter (through April 3).

There's a decent chance you reach 500 cm after the snowfall tonight and Saturday.

Deer Lake is sitting at 471 cm, and Gander is around 447 cm, so far.

Happy early April Fools Day!

After this winter, you may hope that this is a joke, but I'm here to say no it's not.

A system is going to bring late-season snowfall on Wednesday (April 1) that could bring 10-20 cm to parts of the Island; there may also be some ice pellets, freezing rain, and rain along the South Coast, and the Burin and Avalon Peninsulas.

This is going to be a "bitterly" cold weekend for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Most of Newfoundland will be 5 to 10°C, or more, below the seasonal average, with some overnight lows in the minus double digits and wind chills of -15 to -25.

St. John's may flirt with record low temperatures Sunday night when values may fall to near -12°C.

03/26/2026

Sorry, Newfoundland. The next month is looking colder than normal.

For those of you on the Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, and the South Coast:

In typical Newfoundland fashion, your 30+ cm snowfall today is going to be followed by significant rainfall Thursday night into Friday that could lead to flooding conditions. The worst of the rain arrives Friday morning and will continue into the afternoon. Areas along the South Coast, Burin Peninsula, and the southern Avalon Peninsula could see 40-80+ mm of rain. For the northern Avalon (including St. John's-Metro), you will see significant rainfall, but it looks like less than areas to the south. But, you'll want to heed further alerts.

I know that some people don't like a 2 or 3 day heads-up on the weather, but some of you may want to prepare for this one.

Some of the b'ys in Bay Roberts may have better suggestions, but I'd consider doing the following (thanks AI):

- Clear snow a few feet away from your home’s foundation
- Clear window wells, and
- Ensure downspouts extend at least 6 feet (2 metres) away, channeling water away from the house

There will also be very strong southwest winds for most of Newfoundland, particularly the South Coast and eastern Newfoundland (St. John's-Metro is still there), Thursday night into Friday morning, and gusts could reach 120 km/h.

03/24/2026

Thunderstorms (green dots) were detected just east of the Avalon earlier this morning

Here comes the snow, doo-doo-do
Here comes the snow
And I say “have fun, Newfoundland”

March 23/26 9:30 PM Update

03/22/2026

Expect widespread cancellations on Tuesday for much of central and eastern Newfoundland. The snowfall amounts are going to be very significant, especially east of Grand Falls-Windsor, where 30+ cm is likely.

A smorgasbord of precipitation types on Tuesday for the Avalon; perhaps a slight risk of thundersnow? I didn't say that if it doesn't happen.

Flights into and out of YYT will be cancelled for Monday evening and may take until late Tuesday afternoon or evening, or possibly Wednesday morning, before returning to normal.

March 21/26 7:30 PM Update

Snow across the western half of Newfoundland will continue tonight, and eventually move east across the rest of the Island overnight into Sunday morning. Snow gradually ends tomorrow. The heaviest snow will be for areas near and west of Grand Falls-Windsor and the Bay d'Espoir Highway where 15-30 cm is expected. Amounts diminish quickly to the east.

A new system will bring heavy snow, along with a potential change to several hours of freezing rain/ice pellets, and possibly rain for eastern Newfoundland Monday night into Tuesday. There will be some parts of eastern Newfoundland that see 30-50 cm of snow from this storm.

And, just to be crystal clear, unless things have changed, the Avalon and, yes, St. John's-Metro are considered to be in eastern Newfoundland.

March 20/26 9:30 PM NDT Update.

A G3 geomagnetic storm alert has been issued (https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g3-strong-geomagnetic-storm-alert-issued-0).

I've already seen some reports of Northern Lights being visible in Newfoundland and Labrador this evening. There are a lot of clear skies across the Island and The Big Land.

03/20/2026

Sorry, Newfoundland. Winter isn't close to being done yet.
