Our cubs had an amazing weekend at the Tri-Shores Council, Scouts Canada Cuborama at Camp Sylvan despite its soggy start. We once again joined up with 1st St. Marys Scout Group for a weekend of spending time with old friends and making some new ones. A great last camp for the year and we can’t wait for the next one!

With registration for next season well under way we need to add some more scouters to our group so we can continue to provide quality programs to all interested kids. Whether you want to just come for weekly meetings, fill in every once in a while or want to be involved more often and help with planning now is the perfect time to get started so we are ready for the fall.

This week our cubs did their year end review. What better way to finish out the last of their regular meetings before the summer break than to have a campfire complete with skits, songs and smores? They even managed to get in some time exploring along the shore and dock. We might have a new tradition in the making πŸ€”

This week the scouts spent time working on map and compass skills. With the help of their compass and street signs they followed a marked route on a map and worked on setting and following a bearing.

Our groups had an amazing day on Sunday at the Sexsmith Airport / COPA 177 fly/drive in breakfast. The weather was perfect meaning there were a ton of people and planes. From helping keep tables clear to learning about the different planes a great day was had by all.

Among the planes were 3 Harvards which would have been common in the area skies during WW2 flying out of RCAF Station Centralia which was one of the largest training stations in Canada. Definitely a highlight of the day seeing them.

The cubs had a packed meeting this week working on paddling skills ahead of our scheduled canoeing adventure. They learned how to choose a lifejacket or pfd and how to make sure it fits, parts of a canoe, kayak and paddle, how to size a canoe paddle and some basic paddling strokes. We also went over paddling and water safety and what to if a boat capsizes, someone falls out or if there is an emergency.

We finished the night off with some bowling with a throw bag or throwing line donut. Everyone did an amazing job got at least one block down. They all kept their PFD or lifejacket on for almost the entire night too. They all know that even during indoor paddling adventures a PFD only does its job if you are wearing it!

This week the scouts spent their meeting working on lashing with a goal of making a shelter they could use to sleep in. Everyone came up with something a little different for their shelters but it looks like everyone might stay dry if they needed.

This week it was the beavers and cubs turn to learn some first aid. The beavers fixed up their teddy bears small cuts and learned what goes into a first aid kit while the cubs looked at more things they can put in a first aid kit, cleaning and bandaging small cuts in different spots, treating bigger scrapes and minor burns, what might indicate an infection starting and learned how to use an epi pen. We always know they enjoyed the night when the cubs refuse to take all the bandages off until they get home leading to them having to explain to their parents at pick up time they aren’t actually hurt, it was just first aid night 🀣
