Did you know amber isn’t actually a mineral, it’s fossilized tree resin? 🌳
Millions of years ago, sticky resin oozed from ancient trees. Over time, with enough heat and pressure, that resin hardened into the golden gem we know as amber. Sometimes it even trapped tiny insects or plant bits along the way, giving us a real window into prehistoric life!
Amber is soft compared to most gemstones (you can actually scratch it with a fingernail), and if you rub it against fabric it can even create a small static charge. Ancient Greeks noticed this and called it “elektron,” which is actually where we get the word electricity!
Next time your little explorer holds a piece of amber, they’re holding a tiny time capsule from an ancient forest. 🔍✨

It’s actually a type of quartz, and some of the biggest amethyst geodes ever found have been taller than a person!

That phenomenon even has a name: labradorescence. It happens because light bounces between microscopic layers within the stone, creating that signature iridescent flash that looks different from every angle.
