Have you ever wondered what bad HDD heads look like? When heads fail badly (as these did), attempting to continue to use your drive will end in permanent loss of data due to platter damage.
Ever wonder what a damaged drive looks like during the imaging process? You will notice two digit alpha-numeric blocks in the centre area which is HEX code. The jumbled characters off to the side is the interpretation of that code. You will also notice the red errors in the map. This represents a bad sector and the letter represents what kind of error the drive ran into when trying to read that area. The workings between a mechanical hard drive and a solid state device which have no moving parts is very different. SSD's suffer from controller, nand and other firmware problems where as hard drives often suffer from physical damage and require a clean room to work on. Ransomware can be some of the most difficult data recoveries. This type of data loss all depends on weather the decryption for that specific flavor is available. For those of you unfamiliar ransomware is when hackers maliciously encrypt all your files and request a ransom in monetary value. We of course never recommend users to pay this as their is no guarantee that the individual will release your info. Remember to always have a backup and be careful of the websites you vist. This is a WD10S21X Hybrid Drive that we are working on today. Suffering from firmware damage in the system area. These drives are rather rare to come in so these are always interesting cases. A hybrid drive combines the speed of an SSD (NAND flash) memory for frequently accessed data with the cost effectiveness of a traditional HDD for data storage.
