🏔️ Researchers from the University of Central Asia, in cooperation with the State Scientific Institution Centre for Research of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, participated in the first scientific field expedition in over 35 years to assess winter snow dynamics of Pamir glaciers in Tajikistan.

At Glacier No. 457 in the Gunt River basin, the team established five snow pits, measured snow depth and density, and collected data on snow reserves across the glacier.

These winter measurements, together with summer melt data, help scientists calculate the glacier’s full annual mass balance and better understand how it is changing. Early results indicate that seasonal snow cover has significantly reduced above 5,000m in recent years, pointing to near-future glacier mass loss.

The data will support long-term glacier monitoring and improve forecasts of regional water resource changes – critical for a region where glaciers play a strategic role in water, energy and environmental security.

Aga Khan University
Bringing together alumni, former faculty and staff, donors, volunteers, and friends of Aga Khan University, an evening at the Ismaili Centre in Toronto offered an opportunity to reflect on the University's progress, aspirations, and global impact.

Aga Khan University President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin shared updates on AKU's continued growth and its work to advance education, healthcare, and research across Pakistan, East Africa, the United Kingdom, and beyond. The evening also featured a fireside conversation with community leadership on the importance of investing in people and institutions that strengthen communities and expand opportunity.

We were delighted to reconnect with members of the AKU community whose commitment and support continue to advance the University's mission.

Our sincere thanks to the Canadian Leadership for their warm hospitality and longstanding partnership. Gatherings such as these are a powerful reminder that AKU's impact is made possible by a global community united by a shared commitment to service, excellence, and improving lives.

In Kampala, His Highness, together with Princess Zahra Aga Khan and Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, was received at State House by President Museveni and the First Lady, the Honourable Janet Museveni. The delegation joined the President and First Lady for formal talks centred on the long-standing partnership between the Ismaili Imamat, AKDN and Uganda, and shared priorities for future cooperation.

During the visit, His Highness was conferred with the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Master), Uganda’s highest civilian honour. Princess Zahra was also honoured with the Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Commander) in recognition of her long-standing contributions to health, education and women’s empowerment.

At the Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in Nakawa, major new investments in higher education and health care were inaugurated, including the official opening of the first phase of AKU’s 60-acre Kampala campus. Aga Khan University
“Seek our different perspectives. Commit to continuous learning. Look for big problems to tackle. Embrace optimism.”

That was the message AKU President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin carried to the stage as he delivered the keynote address at the University of Alberta Convocation, honouring the graduating classes of Nursing and Law.

Addressing the graduands, he reflected on the vital role they will play in shaping a more just and compassionate world:

“You are lawyers: advocates for justice, equality, and the rule of law itself.
You are nurses: defenders of human dignity and the right to the highest attainable standard of health.
Together, you help build societies that are healthier, fairer, and more humane.”

Speaking about the partnership between the University of Alberta and the Aga Khan University, he said:

“We feel very fortunate to collaborate with Alberta scholars on research and programme development; to have dozens of our faculty members complete training here in Edmonton; and to have provided more than 60 Alberta students with international learning opportunities.”

AKU congratulates the Class of 2026 as they begin the next chapter of their journey, and extends its deep gratitude to the University of Alberta for a partnership that has flourished over nearly two decades.

Aga Khan Music Programme
A voice and a viola d'amore. Yahya Hussein Abdallah and Jasser Haj Youssef in a free recital of Sufi poetry and Eastern literature, this Saturday at Saint-Cloud.

Jasser Haj Youssef, born in Monastir and long based in France, is an exceptional violinist equally at home in Arabic and European classical traditions, and one of the leading voices in the revival of the viola d'amore. Yahya Hussein Abdallah, the Tanzanian singer and composer and winner of the 2022 Aga Khan Music Award, is a spellbinding interpreter of Sufi poetry and Eastern literature, weaving song and recitation into a meditation on faith, belief and the life of the spirit.

The concert is free and open to all, presented with the support of the Aga Khan Music Programme.

Join us at the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud on Saturday 13 June, 16h45. Featuring:
