Snana Yatra

Did you know ?

On the day of the Snana Yatra, the deities are bathed with 108 pots, of ritually purified water drawn from the Suna Kua or the northern well of the temple. All the pots are then preserved in the Bhoga Mandap and purified by the priests with Haldi (turmeric), Akshat (whole rice), Chandan (Sandalwood), flowers and perfumes.

Did you know ?

The practice of presenting Chappan Bhog (56 offerings) to Lord Jagannath in Puri rooted from a tale in Hindu mythology.

According to legend, Lord Krishna - an incarnation of Lord Jagannath, once fasted for seven days while holding up Govardhan Hill to shield the village of Vrindavan from torrential rains.
Since Lord Krishna typically consumed eight meals a day, he missed a total of 56 meals during this period (8 meals × 7 days).

To make up for this, devotees now prepare a lavish feast of 56 distinct dishes daily as an offering to Lord Jagannath.

Before the grand procession begins, witness the sacred Pahandi Bije ritual, where the deities (Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra) are ceremonially carried out of the temple amidst chanting and devotional music. Their idols are gently swayed in a rhythmic motion, symbolizing their eagerness to meet devotees!
