Brene Brown’s clarification on the difference between empathy and sympathy was a game changer when it came to building connection and unleashing my inner Jedi in the interview room.
Empathy is connecting, sympathy is disconnecting or separating - her wisdom became one of my career’s greatest aha moments.

Welcome to The Unconventional Collective. I'm Dave Sweet, a former police officer who, for twenty-five years, worked in a large western Canadian police service - the last 14 years specializing in homicide investigations.
In 2023, I took an exciting step forward by founding The Unconventional Collective – an investigation and training agency that brings fresh, innovative approaches to traditional investigation and crime prevention methods, along with a range of other helpful services.
As an author, public speaker, and consultant, I now happily offer two main service lines.
Through Unconventional Consulting, I deliver professional crime prevention services, investigative support, and case consultation in the Calgary area.
In the Unconventional Classroom, I deliver personalized keynotes, private events, corporate workshops, and investigative skills training, all inspired by my true-crime books and podcast series, designed to educate, motivate, and engage any audience.
Whether you're a corporate leader looking for an unconventional speaker, a true crime fan organizing a private event, or someone in need of expert investigative support, The Unconventional Collective (both Consulting and Classroom) is here with the experience and innovative spirit to meet your needs.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an approach to planning and urban development aimed at reducing opportunities for crime and unwanted behavior. Communities, homes, commercial premises, and parks can all be made safer through thoughtful environmental design.
A crime prevention audit evaluates a property, business, or neighborhood to pinpoint its security vulnerabilities. This process aids in recognizing where potential opportunities for offenders might exist and offers recommendations on how to enhance the protection of targets.
At Unconventional Consulting, our audits assess how well your space aligns with current crime prevention principles.
My audits include:
• A budget-friendly consultation.
• Interviews with space users.
• An analysis of online reviews and crime trends.
• Day- and nighttime visits.
• A comprehensive final report with findings and recommendations.
• A final in-person stakeholder engagement session.
