Just wanted to share a message from a 9 year old Brant County resident. Such a sweet message and it just shows how much kids can learn about wildlife. Hope you all enjoy this cute message and encourage people in your lives to save turtles and other wildlife. And please always be aware of road safety. A safety vest is helpful and using 4-ways if you are in a vehicle. Always put safety first!

Several people have mentioned the driver of a black Dodge Ram has been targeting nesting turtles on the shoulder of roads. If you witness this, please getting a plate number and report to police.

DID YOU SEE A DELIBERATE HIT?

Intentionally harming turtles is an offence with fines of up to $25,000.00 or 1 year in jail.

Get the license plate and provide details to the OMNRF conservation officers by calling the TIPS line at 1-877-TIPS MNR (1-877-847-7667).

Deliberately harming turtles means that someone went out of their way to hit the turtle or alternately did not avoid the turtle when they had the means to safely do so.

Video, photos and other witnesses are always helpful but not necessary when reporting infractions.

Poaching turtles carries fines of up to $100,000.00. If you see suspicious activity call the authorities above.

Just a reminder as turtles are starting to lay nests, we have a turtle conservation program in Brantford. For any turtle questions, please call/text the helpline at 519-865-9873.

A few things we can provide:
We provide training, education, and awareness.
We have nest protectors available for the community.
We can try to connect volunteers to help watch nesting turtles.
We work with several organizations to incubate eggs that are laid on the sides of roads.
We also have permits to relocate nests.

If you are calling about a turtle laying a nest on a road or trail please text/email coordinates or a map link and photo. We have been getting many calls, and it takes time to respond.

Thanks!

A busy day today for nesting turtles. We managed to protect several nests. Unfortunately several have been killed or injured. If you find an injured turtles, there are vets and volunteers who help rehabilate turtles or recover eggs from deceased and fatally injured turtles. Please reach out to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge or the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre if you find an injured or dead turtle.

Thanks for the calls today to protect freshly laid turtle nests! We found this little guy crossing one of the rail trails. A long trip, helped along by a free ride to the waters edge. 😍🐒
