June Gardening Checklist

✅ Plant Warm-Season Crops
Now is the time to plant corn, peppers, squash, melons, and tomatoes. The soil is warm and the risk of frost is minimal.

✅ Protect Tomatoes from Blight
Once tomato plants are about knee-high, begin applying a copper fungicide to help prevent late blight. Remember, blight cannot be cured, only prevented.

✅ Water Deeply
Rather than watering a little every day, water thoroughly and less often. Allow the soil to dry about 3 cm below the surface between waterings. Container gardens may still need daily watering during hot weather.

✅ Mulch for Healthier Plants
Apply cedar mulch around flower beds and shrubs, and straw around vegetable gardens. A few centimetres of mulch helps keep roots cool, conserve moisture, and reduce weeds.

✅ Inspect Boxwoods
Watch for signs of Box Tree Moth, including caterpillars, webbing, and chewed foliage. If detected, treat with B.T.K. to help control infestations.

✅ Deadhead Annuals
Regularly remove spent blooms from petunias, calibrachoa, geraniums, and other flowering annuals to encourage continuous blooms and keep your containers looking their best all summer long.

🌱 Sleep, Creep, Leap! 🌱

Have you ever planted a perennial and wondered why it isn’t growing as quickly as you expected?

There’s a saying gardeners have used for years: Sleep, Creep, Leap.

🌿 Year 1: Sleep – Perennials spend their first year establishing roots and settling into their new home.

🌿 Year 2: Creep – You’ll start to see more growth as the plant becomes established.

🌿 Year 3: Leap – This is when many perennials really take off, reaching their full potential and putting on a spectacular show!

The key is patience. Most perennials need about three years to mature, but the reward is years of beautiful blooms and dependable garden performance.

Good things grow with time! 🌸
