I thinking becoming a mom while being a business owner was the first time I was forced to HONESTLY look at my capacity.
Which sucked, TBH, because I didn’t know where to go from there. So I started restructuring everything (not something I recommend doing all at once, BTW):
Boundaries
Time Blocking
Work Windows
Outsourcing
Pricing
Availability…
And one of the hardest things to learn was that whatever didn’t get finished in that time block was a tomorrow problem.
Looking back, I honestly have no idea how I used to operate that way and still survive. Now I realize how unsustainable that was once I became a mom, and that’s okay. Businesses change and grow and they SHOULD.
Feel free to DM me if you’re stuck in the hustle. 🩷

I keep coming back to this idea and wondering if it’s just me noticing it more, or something a lot of us are quietly navigating.

We’ve all done this. Someone compliments your sweater and you’re like, “thanks; I got it on clearance though.”
It feels harmless, but we do it with our work too. The work we actually work hard on, and put skill and energy into. We soften it and add a side note so it doesn’t feel like we’re taking up too much space or being *too* proud.
Don’t do that. You’re good at what you do. You work hard and you deserve to be proud of that.
✨New Blog Post✨ Authority is Uncomfortable When You’re Taught To Be Agreeable: “These are qualities we install into women from an incredibly young age. In fact, we begin to see children demonstrate knowledge of gender related stereotypes by the age of three (Miller et al., 2009). THREE.”

It’s unreasonable to expect to be fully booked from day one in ANY creative industry, yet somehow if you’re not, it’s treated like you’re not working hard enough. That narrative is off.
YES — you should use your time to draw, practice, study your craft, and learn from people ahead of you. That part matters. But so does paying your bills, reducing stress, and giving yourself the stability to actually stay in the game long enough to succeed.
🇲🇽This clip is from The Glass Factory in Cabo San Lucas. It’s absolutely stunning and worth the walk (or Uber) from the Hotel District.

If you think any of these women were not scared, nervous, shaky in their voice or awkward AF when they first started…. Think again.
The difference?
They decided to do it anyway. Fear doesn’t mean you’re unqualified; it means you’re stepping up.

Hi, I’m Erin! I’m a tattooer, business coach for creatives, multidisciplinary artist, and mom… and I’ve gained a heap of new followers since I last introduced myself, so I thought I was due.
I started HeyArtist because I was sick of hearing other business owners struggle with the same things I struggled with over the past 18+ years: everything from marketing, budgeting, building a website, or managing their time while trying to take care of a household or raise a family.
There’s so much corporate business support out there, but it just doesn’t fit the model of a creative business. Or the mindset, honestly.
With HeyArtist, I use actual hands-on experience with proven strategy so you can build a business that can sustain you AND that you feel really good about.
I’m not here for hustle culture or “we’ve all got the same 24 hours” energy. I believe in building businesses that work for creatives and feel good, too.
If you’re a creative ready to make your business work for you, let’s set up a chat! All my contact is linked in the bio. :)

If it gives you that pit-of-your-stomach ick feeling, that’s self-abandonment.
Having and building self-trust walks us from these moments. Self-trust looks like charging for the time you actually worked, declining clients that aren’t a good fit or make you feel sh!tty, actually taking the weekend off, and stopping to eat a whole- lunch.
If you need help building boundaries around this and developing more self-trust, email me! Linked in bio.

Making less than minimum wage in your business? Stop guessing. Your hourly rate needs to reflect your time, costs, and goals… not a ‘hope for the best’ situation.
