Botterill in the mix

Guy Botterill has slotted into second at km 28, just 2 seconds off Seth Quintero. A perfect start for the 38-year-old, who has a score to settle. After shining in 2024 as top rookie and sixth overall, he crashed out of the race last year. Paired with the Spanish navigator Oriol Mena for his third Dakar, he sums up the challenge succinctly: "We just need a bit more luck".

The first riders have reached the km 215 fuel stop, with Ross Branch leading by 54 seconds over Daniel Sanders and 1′11″ over Edgar Canet. The fight for the stage win is shaping up between the Hero factory rider and the two Red Bull KTM factory riders, with Ricky Brabec lying in wait at 1′36″.
