CST Receives Automatic Weather Station
The College of Science and Technology (CST) marked a significant milestone on 6th April 2026 with the official handover of a Grade A Automatic Weather Station by JICA. This advanced system, previously used under The Technical Cooperation Project for Capacity Enhancement on Irrigation Planning, Design and Construction Management in Bhutan, Irrigation Division, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, has now been entrusted to CST to support academic and research activities.
The handover included a complete setup comprising of an Automatic Weather Station, rain gauge and a desktop computer equipped with data collection software. With this addition, CST strengthens its capacity to integrate practical learning with modern technology.
Advancing Real Time Environmental Monitoring
The newly installed system enables real time data collection and monitoring, allowing continuous observation of key meteorological parameters such as:
โข Rainfall intensity
โข Air temperature
โข Solar radiation
โข Wind speed
This setup provides accurate and up to date data, enhancing both classroom learning and field based analysis.

Day 4 (March 14, 2026): Taking learning with Spiritual Guidance
The fourth day of the study tour, funded by the Global Environment Facility through the ECRUL Project, spearheaded by the Royal Government of Bhutan in partnership with the UNDP, focused on applying theoretical knowledge in the field. Students of the 2nd and 3rd year Water Resources Engineering were taken to the Wangchhu river where they measured the discharge and depth to calculate the average discharge of the river.
The day continued with a hike to the Chari monastery whereby the students were able to receive blessings from the local deity, blending technical learning with spiritual guidance. This concluded the 4-day study tour with the students returning back to college tomorrow.

Day 3 (March 13, 2026): From Source to Tap
The third day of the study tour, funded by the Global Environment Facility through the ECRUL Project, spearheaded by the Royal Government of Bhutan in partnership with the UNDP, focused on water treatment processes. Students visited the Taba Water Treatment Plant to observe drinking water treatment and the Babesa Water Treatment Plant to learn about wastewater treatment.
The day ended at the Super Fab Lab in Thimphu Techpark, where students explored how digital fabrication can merge with traditional water engineering. The experience highlighted that innovation in water resources also includes creative, localized solutions using modern tools.
