আমি যখন English Medium-এ পড়তাম, তখন Olympiad সম্পর্কে খুব একটা জানতাম না। পরে দেখেছি, আমার অনেক বন্ধু Olympiad-এ অংশ নিয়ে বিশ্বের শীর্ষ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে উচ্চ স্কলারশিপ নিয়ে পড়তে গেছে। আজও বাংলাদেশের অনেক English Medium শিক্ষার্থী ও অভিভাবক এই সুযোগগুলো সম্পর্কে যথেষ্ট জানেন না।

আপনার সন্তান যদি academically inclined হয়, কোনো নির্দিষ্ট subject-এ আগ্রহী হয়, অথবা পড়াশোনায় ভালো করে, তাহলে ছোটবেলা থেকেই Olympiad-এ অংশগ্রহণ তার জন্য অসাধারণ একটি সুযোগ হতে পারে।

অনেক সময় আমরা A Level শেষ হওয়ার পর University application নিয়ে চিন্তা শুরু করি। তখন দেখা যায়, বিশ্বের শীর্ষ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো শুধু GPA বা grades দেখে না; তারা extracurricular activities, leadership, research, competitions এবং academic achievements-ও গুরুত্বের সাথে মূল্যায়ন করে।

সেই extracurricular profile শক্তিশালী করার অন্যতম কার্যকর মাধ্যম হলো Olympiad।

তবে একটি বিষয় মনে রাখা জরুরি—সব “Olympiad” একই ধরনের নয়। অনেক সাধারণ competition-ও Olympiad নামে পরিচিত হয়। তাই website দেখে নিশ্চিত হবেন যে সেটি International Olympiad pathway-এর অংশ কিনা।

সাধারণত প্রক্রিয়াটি এমন হয়:

• দেশব্যাপী selection পরীক্ষা নেওয়া হয়।
• সেরা শিক্ষার্থীদের নিয়ে National Team গঠন করা হয়।
• National Team-কে অতিরিক্ত training দেওয়া হয়।
• এরপর তারা International Olympiad-এ বাংলাদেশের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করে।

International Olympiad-এ Gold Medal, Silver Medal, Bronze Medal বা Honourable Mention অর্জন করা শিক্ষার্থীরা বিশ্বব্যাপী অত্যন্ত সম্মানিত হয়। University admission-এর সময় এসব অর্জন বিশাল মূল্য বহন করে।

আমি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে এমন অনেককে চিনি—

• একজন International Biology Olympiad-এ medal পাওয়ার পর scholarship নিয়ে Oxford বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হয়েছে।
• আরেকজন Mathematics Olympiad, Robotics Olympiad এবং Programming background-এর কারণে Brown University-তে 97% scholarship পেয়েছে।
• বাংলাদেশের প্রথম International Mathematical Olympiad Gold Medalist MIT-এ পড়াশোনা করেছে।
• International Physics Olympiad-এ বাংলাদেশের প্রথম Silver Medalist Princeton University-তে full-funded scholarship নিয়ে পড়েছে।

অবশ্যই Olympiad করার উদ্দেশ্য শুধুমাত্র scholarship বা university admission হওয়া উচিত নয়।
