Islamic Slaughter (Qurbani): Faith, Science & Compassion
Many people see Qurbani only as a religious ritual. But if we look deeper, Islamic slaughter is also based on clear anatomical, physiological, and animal welfare principles.
In Islamic slaughter, several important structures in the neck are cut properly:
The trachea (windpipe)
The esophagus (food pipe)
The two main blood vessels: carotid arteries and jugular veins
The carotid arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the brain. When these are cut, blood supply to the brain rapidly decreases, causing the animal to lose consciousness very quickly. At the same time, cutting the jugular veins allows rapid blood drainage, which is important for hygiene and meat quality.
According to Hanafi Fiqh, at least 3 out of these 4 structures must be cut completely. In proper slaughter, usually all 4 are cut.
Many people notice that after slaughter the animal’s legs may move or the body may twitch. This can look painful, but in most cases it is actually a spinal reflex. Even after the brain loses consciousness due to loss of blood flow, some nerves and spinal circuits can remain active briefly, causing involuntary muscle movements. These are not signs of conscious pain.
For this reason, Islamic teachings discourage cutting the spinal cord at the beginning. Allowing the heart to continue pumping briefly helps more blood leave the body naturally and effectively.
Another common mistake is repeatedly stabbing or cutting the animal after slaughter. This is unnecessary and can damage tissues, increase stress responses, and interfere with proper blood drainage.
What is remarkable is that the humane slaughter principles taught in Islam over 1400 years ago closely align with many modern veterinary and animal welfare recommendations.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Their meat and blood do not reach Allah, but your piety reaches Him.”
— Surah Al-Hajj 22:37
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his knife and give comfort to the animal.”
— Sahih Muslim 1955
Qurbani is not about bloodshed. It is about obedience to Allah, mercy, compassion, and caring for His creation.

One small hope, the very first step of a big dream!
If you hire someone at 50k. You teach him. You train him.
One day, he leaves for a 100k job. Good for him.
He’ll send his kids to a better school.
Maybe buy a small car. Maybe a house someday.
Over 30 years, he earns 18 million more than he would’ve — because you gave him that first push.”
IF your niyyah was to help. To uplift.
That 18 million becomes your Sadqa in Allah’s eyes.
So no - don’t get sad when someone leaves.
Don’t say “after all I did for him…”
People are not your assets.
They are Amaanahs.
The richest man in China said: "If you put bananas and money in front of monkeys, the monkeys will choose the bananas because they don’t know that money can buy many bananas. In fact, if you offer WORK and BUSINESS to people, they will choose to WORK because most people don’t know that a BUSINESS can generate more MONEY than a salary. One of the reasons why the poor are poor is because they are not trained to recognize business opportunities. They spend a lot of time in school, and what they learn in school is to work for a salary instead of working for themselves. Profits are better than salaries because salaries can allow you to make a living, but profits can generate you a fortune."
