Time to Rethink Captaincy and Team Position

It may be time to reconsider both the captaincy and team role of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. While his overall performance has improved across formats, his contribution in ODIs remains largely mediocre. In modern one-day cricket, a top-six batter with a strike rate of around 60–65 is below the expected standard. This slow scoring rate often puts pressure on the middle and lower order, affecting the team’s overall momentum.

Moreover, his bowling has not been particularly effective on sporting wickets, where Bangladesh often needs breakthroughs to control the game. The combination of modest batting and inconsistent bowling makes it difficult to justify his current position in the team’s core lineup.

From a leadership perspective, Miraz has struggled to inspire the side compared to captains like Najmul Hossain Shanto or his predecessors. It is often observed that when a captain’s individual form declines, their confidence drops, which can negatively influence team morale and performance.

Under his captaincy, Bangladesh cricket appears to be experiencing one of its most challenging periods since the early 2000s. The team is on the verge of losing four consecutive series—an alarming sign for a side that had been showing steady progress in recent years.

A timely reassessment of leadership and role clarity is crucial if Bangladesh hopes to regain its competitive edge and rebuild confidence within the squad.

The group featuring India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh is set to be one of the most competitive in the upcoming Champions Trophy. India, as always, enters the tournament as a strong favorite, thanks to their well-balanced squad and depth in every department. Their top five is among the best in the world, capable of taking on any bowling attack.

Pakistan, on the other hand, boasts a formidable batting lineup, particularly in the middle order, which has been in excellent form. Their bowling attack remains world-class, featuring a potent mix of pace and spin that can trouble any opposition.

New Zealand, often regarded as the perennial dark horse in ICC tournaments, comes into this event in red-hot form, especially after their impressive showing in the recently concluded tri-nation series. Given their history of punching above their weight on big stages, it wouldn't be a surprise if they go all the way.

Bangladesh, comparatively the weakest on paper, still possesses some dangerous players, particularly in their top and lower order, with talents like Tanjid, Soumya, Jaker, and Rishad capable of making an impact. However, their middle order's inconsistency remains a concern. If they manage to find stability, they could pose a serious challenge.

With the flat pitches in Pakistan expected to favor batters, this tournament is likely to be a high-scoring affair. The teams with the most consistent batting performances will have the best chance of lifting the trophy. Adaptability, ex*****on under pressure, and the ability to capitalize on key moments will be crucial in determining the ultimate champion.

🗣 "The team has quality batters, and the bowling department is equally impressive. Taskin and Nahid can consistently bowl over 140 kph, while the spin attack offers three different types of bowlers with unique variations. They have the potential to restrict any team to under 250."

Pakistan legend and Bangladesh's spin bowling coach, Mushtaq Ahmed, is highly optimistic about Bangladesh securing their first-ever ICC trophy in the upcoming Champions Trophy!

The Bangladesh cricket team is facing a potential transition in their lower middle order with the likely retirement of Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim within the next year. This presents an opportunity to develop their successors, and two promising candidates are Jaker Ali and Ankon.

These players have the potential to be vital assets in the lower middle order and, given proper nurturing and consistent opportunities over the next few years, could serve Bangladesh for the next decade. Bangladesh has historically struggled with finishing games strongly, and Jaker and Ankon, along with someone like Shamim Patowary, could be the solution in white-ball cricket.

Both Jaker and Ankon possess the qualities needed to perform against top-tier teams. Their abilities have already been demonstrated in first-class and List A cricket.

This strategic investment in Jaker and Ankon is crucial for Bangladesh's future in limited-overs cricket

Fortune Barishal is wasting valuable talent by stacking too many players of the same category, limiting their opportunities to play. Having top-quality spinners like Rishad Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Naeem Hasan, and Taijul Islam in one squad means that three of them often end up on the bench.

Since all these players are either in or around the national team setup, keeping them idle is counterproductive. The BPL should serve as a platform for them to gain confidence and develop their skills in competitive matches. Meanwhile, other teams struggle to find quality spinners, creating an imbalance in the tournament.

The BPL governing committee should address this issue to ensure better talent distribution, ultimately benefiting the Bangladesh national team.
