১৮৯৫ সালে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর নিজেকে ব্যবসার সাথে জড়িয়ে ফেলেন। তিনি ও তার দুই ভাগ্নে সুরেন্দ্রনাথ ও বলেন্দ্রনাথ এর সহায়তায় শিলাইদহে টেগর এন্ড কোম্পানী গড়ে তোলেন যৌথ মুলধনী ব্যবসা। ভুসিমাল ও পাটের ব্যবসা করার জন্য রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর এখানে প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন ‘টেগর অ্যান্ড কোম্পানি’।সে বছরই ব্যবসায়িক সুবিধার্থে টেগোর এন্ড কোম্পানী শিলাইদহ থেকে কুষ্টিয়ায় স্থানান্তরিত করেন। কোম্পানী দেখাশুনার জন্য কবি শহরের মিল পাড়ায় একটি দোতলা ভবন নির্মাণ করেন। বর্তমানে এ ভবনটিই টেগর লজ নামে পরিচিত।
