As Aussie as vanilla slice: how the delicate European dessert became the snot block of Aussie bakeries 07/02/2024

Where is the best vanilla slice in Newcastle?

(It's for science) ๐Ÿง

Proclaimed as a national icon, the vanilla slice is a familiar sight in Australian bakeries โ€“ but where did this pastry come from?

History and Humanities lecturer, Dr Chip Van Dyk, dives into the many layers of the vanilla slice across Europe and the United States, with the earliest mention found in a 1651 French cookbook as a gateau with frangipane.

Whether it's the thickness of the custard or the crunch of the pastry, tell us where in Newcastle we can find the one that takes that top spot. ๐Ÿฅ‡

As Aussie as vanilla slice: how the delicate European dessert became the snot block of Aussie bakeries Imported from Europe, the vanilla slice has been fully assimilated into Australian food culture, an identifiable icon. You know you really belong when you finally get a nickname.
