Make your own deodorant, it is simple and very basic ingredients. This post from Pip Magazine provides recipes for both a spray and a paste.
I have been making and using deodorant paste for about the last 6 years, saved $$$ and who knows how many bottles, plastic bits and no nasty chemicals being absorbed into my body via my skin.

You don't need to buy fancy containers to put it in, I initially just used a clean salsa jar, then when I found a tin at the op shop, started using that.
I haven't used the spray, again if you look at all your current containers, am sure there will be a suitable spray bottle to reuse. Or ask a friend, family to keep suitable spray bottles, containers for you.

Ode to my apple tree… It is that magical time of year in our garden when we have an abundance of apples. Sweet, crisp, crunchy apples – nothing like those you buy in the supermarket. Once you have tasted homegrown or locally grown organic apples you will never think of apples in the same way again.

We have planted a variety of apples so the harvesting stretches out over the maximum number of months. Our favourite and most prolific apple tree though is a Jonathon apple tree that I bought as a sapling from the apple seller at our local market. I planted it while I was pregnant with my youngest child, who is now 11.

Each year I prune it, add compost, w**d under it and mulch it, but apart from that it doesn’t get much attention, yet each year it faithfully gives back. We had a couple of years where we lost the fruit to birds and fruit fly but the rest of the time it has supplied us well. I think this year is the best so far.

I think it is successful for a few reasons; I bought it from someone who was growing them locally, so it is suited to our climate. It is in a covered orchard that helps keep the birds out (although not all!). We have beehives nearby that pollinate it. We have naturally healthy soil which we add compost to each year. I prune it each year. I don’t use pesticides or herbicides or chemical fertilisers on the property, which helps maintain its fungal relationships.

Given that right now we are in the lovely state of apple abundance I thought I would point you in the direction of some of Pip’s best apple recipes for those of you are in a similar situation or are just enjoying the abundance of fresh apples from the shops.

Got an abundance of rhubarb? Why not make this super quick, super easy Apple & Rhubarb Crumble? & it’s completely sugar-free to boot!

Ingredients:

* 3 rhubarb stalks
* 2 green apples
* 1 cup of rolled oats
* 1 cup of desiccated coconut
* 1 cup of crushed almonds
* 3 tbsp butter
* Cinnamon

Method:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius.

Melt butter in saucepan. Add rhubarb & apple, cover & simmer on low for 10 minutes or so, until the rhubarb & apple soften and slightly liquify.

Meanwhile, combine rolled oats, desiccated coconut & almonds in a seperate bowl & set aside.

Tip rhubarb & apple into a shallow dish and evenly sprinkle oats mixture over the top. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Pop in the oven for 15-20 minutes.

(End result may not look that pretty but boy is it delicious! …so much so some got stolen before a photo could be taken! 🤭)

Last week, I had a chat with in an interview with and we were discussing the concept of “enoughness”.

If you have read the newest issue of Pip, and listened to our most recent podcast, you’ll know I interviewed about “enoughness” in home design when you’re renovating. We spoke about how sometimes the best thing to do is accept what you have, rather than feeling the pressure to create homes that have all these extra things that we don’t necessarily need, and which can then be a burden to us as we become more in debt to pay for them.

I also discussed the idea of enoughness when looking at ones self. That you are enough. So often, for so many of us, we are looking after our kids and we’re trying to work and trying to be part of our community and have our own gardens and grow our own food, but we always feel like we’re not doing enough and we’re struggling in those areas, and then we feel guilty.

Enoughness requires no extra energy, finances or action. It’s the art of accepting what we have as enough, or reassessing what we define as enough, and that on its own can do so much towards helping yourselves... and the planet.

Pip Podcast #40: Jane Hilliard | Pip Magazine

🎧 It's Pip Podcast time! This week we speak to Tasmanian building designer, Jane Hilliard, who is is on a mission to claw back the overconsumption rampant in the building industry.

Swimming against the metaphorical tide that promotes ever-expanding McMansion-style developments, Jane champions the concept of ‘enoughness’ in her professional life and in her everyday life, too.

In Jane’s own words, enoughness is about “working out what you need to be happy and healthy, without taking more than your fair share.” And when our homes are created with this in mind, the positive impacts radiate.
