Hey guys remember if you are doing our training academy starting this weekend you need to:
1. Sign up on DEMS (if you don't have access yet, let me know you are coming).
2. Download the course info document from DEMS.
3. Do the prework and bring the certificates to the course.
4. Bring your own food and drink.

NOTE: Provide First Aid MUST have been done in the last 6 months to count as corequisite for Provide Advanced First Aid otherwise you will need to do a challenge test to do it again. I can probably facilitate that on 17 October.

Saturdays 1.30pm-8.30pm
Sundays 8.30am-4.30pm

10 Oct - Provide First Aid & New Member Induction Book issues
11 Oct - Provide Pain Management & Provide Advanced Resuscitation. (Check DEMS for order of courses during the day of only coming for one course. )
17-18 Oct - Provide Advanced First Aid & HLTAID008 Manage First Aid Resources (homework)
24 Oct - Safety & Communications workshop & HLTAID008 issues
25 Oct - for existing members needing to reaccredit any of the above.

Team Leaders please remind your teams. Especially about PFA needing to be no more than 6 months old. Thanks all. (Can someone please tag Bayan and copy this to Discord, too?)

A couple of helpers each day would be great.

No need to wear uniform.
It's time to get back to duty. In going tomorrow morning. Who else is in?

A message from the CEO:

Dear members,
As you know, we've been asked by NSW Health to support their efforts in keeping COVID-19 at bay in NSW. They are requesting our help to provide temperature screening to frontline workers.
Over the last few days we've seen just how rapidly a second wave can hit. Cases in Victoria are on the rise with COVID clusters connected to state governments quarantine operations at some of Melbournes hotels.
This is where we can help.
Currently all international passengers arriving in Sydney must be quarantined for 2 weeks as part of the government’s COVID-19 response. After being screened at the airport, passengers that are asymptomatic are sent to police supervised hotels in and around Sydney CBD. To ensure NSW doesn’t get a second wave, NSW Health have asked that St John supports them and helps protect our communities by temperature screening daily all staff (police, hotel staff, delivery staff and healthcare workers) at 17 hotels throughout the Sydney CBD.
Victorian Chief Health Officer said their department had now issued a full review of health protocols at all Victorian quarantine hotels in response to the outbreak. In NSW we can help stop it before it happens.
This is an opportunity for us to keep frontline workers safe and healthy, as well as reduce the risk of community transmissions.
There are 17 hotels that we need to cover, every single shift that can be covered by one of our volunteers will make a difference. If you have any time available, please register today on DEMS. Any further questions can be answered by sending an email to [email protected].
Thank you for everything you are doing, as always, I am in awe of the commitment I see at St John.
Thank you
Sarah

Hey Everyone, Congratulations on getting all your 2018 requirements done and onto VIP.

I think I might be waiting for a couple of National Child Safety results to drop across (I hope) but otherwise ALL DONE!

Well done.

St John Ambulance Parramatta Division is a self-funded charitable organisation, dedicated to helping people in sickness, distress, suffering or danger.

St John Ambulance Australia was established in 1883. Its early beginnings drew inspiration from the Knights of St John from medieval times. These Knights offered care and shelter for pilgrims and Crusaders during their times of need by frequently going onto the battlefields to tend to the injured. To distinguish themselves as supportive allies, they wore the Cross of Calvary, from which the modern-day emblem of St John Ambulance Australia is derived. The work of The Order of St John is now carried out in many countries around the world, and it continues to draw its inspiration from these proud and honourable beginnings. St John is a Royal Order of Chivalry with The Queen as its Sovereign Head. St John Ambulance Parramatta Division was first established in 1925.

Well done to our wonderful trainers Josh, Ethan and Vince!!!

We are so proud of you all!

This past weekend, our Intensive Care Paramedic - Josh, Emergency Medical Technician - Ethan, and First Responder - Vince, held a training day for our members from the Parramatta, UNSW, USYD, Hills, Ku-ring-gai and North Rocks divisions.

These members were educated on basic and advanced assessments and management skills so that they can provide the best care to patients at emergencies.

Every attendee said that they would come again as they all felt they learnt a heap and now feel much more prepared to take care of unwell patients in the best way possible 🙌

Happy National Volunteer Week!!

Happy #NationalVolunteerWeek! We are excited today to share Hayley's story. During the day, Hayley works as a scientist - with a strong passion for cancer-related research and development. Outside of work, Hayley said: "I love spending time with my loved ones, going on hikes with my dog, playing the guitar, Krav Maga training, and, of course, volunteering."

Currently, Hayley is the Divisional Operations Coordinator for the SJA Parramatta Division, as well as a Deputy Training Coordinator for the SES Parramatta Unit. She said: "My volunteer work is super important to me. During moments of crisis in my life, I remember being so grateful for the support I received from volunteer organisations. I was in awe of the big, generous and loving hearts they all had. Freely giving up their time and energy to be there for their community. I wanted to return the favour, each day of my life.

"Apart from learning nifty new skills and meeting all sorts of amazing people, it truly fills my soul knowing that during a traumatic experience, I can provide some sort of comfort and aid to those in need of it. To know that in some small way, I've made someone's day better, and the community around me, a better place."

We love what you do Hayley - thank you! ❤💛

Happy #ANZACDay. Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. We are so thankful to everyone who fought for our country.

Our volunteers will be out covering over 70 Anzac Day events today to ensure all events across the state run smoothly as we commemorate such an important occasion 💛

Have you met Hayley before?

Hayley is our Divisional Operations Coordinator and also a Deputy Training Coordinator with the SES

Here is a little bit about Hayley...

During the day, Hayley works at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Hayley is one of the Laboratory Scientists within the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomic's Sequencing Facility - the largest sequencing facility in the southern hemisphere. She originally started in the Cancer Diagnostics team, working on validating a large tumour screening assay for cancer patients. Now that that work has been completed, she has recently begun genomic sequencing work for multiple other research projects throughout the facility.

What made you want to volunteer?

'After school, I was tossing up between becoming a Paramedic or a Biomedical Scientist. I followed my heart and decided on the latter but a part of me was still curious about, and drawn to, working with emergency services. Later, as an adult, I started to want to find a way I could give back to the community by volunteering regularly. One day, a friend at work asked if I wanted to join St John with her and I thought this was the perfect solution! Down the track, whilst on a duty at Giants Stadium covering the AFL, a member suggested that I join the SES. I remembered seeing them work as they attended to a gum tree that had fallen on my roof. I was so grateful for their assistance and I thought, that was exactly the feeling I wanted to give back to the community every single day of my life'.

Hayley does an amazing job across both organisations and we are extremely lucky to have her apart of our team!!!

The only way to tell you haven’t got COVID-19 is to get a test - even with mild symptoms.

There are more than 350 COVID-19 testing locations across NSW, many of which are open seven days a week. After your test, immediately self-isolate until you receive your result. Most people in NSW get their results within 24 hours.

Likewise, if you’re someone who has recently left hotel quarantine, the NSW Chief Health Officer has asked that you have an extra COVID-19 test to keep the NSW community safe. This is because very rarely, there have been people infected with COVID-19 who have an incubation period of more than 14 days.

For more information on COVID-19 symptoms and to find your nearest testing clinic, visit https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/symptoms-and-testing.

MAS-CAS SIMULATION

On Saturday, Parramatta Division held a mass casualty simulation - car versus tree accident. 4 treating crews had to triage and treat 5 patients (3 of which were critically unwell). They then had to transport these patients either to a simulated 'major trauma hospital' or to the airfield to meet a simulated 'aeromedical helicopter team'.

Great work team! Definitely an enjoyable day had by all.
