Keith Mann’s passing marks a significant loss for the animal liberation movement, and ARZone honours his legacy.
In Memory of Keith Mann
The news of Keith Mann’s passing on Christmas Day has reverberated deeply throughout the animal liberation community. Although I didn’t know Keith personally, his work and his name have long been part of the movement’s collective memory.
Keith emerged during a period when the modern animal liberation movement was rapidly evolving. The 1980s and 1990s saw a surge of grassroots organising, direct action, and underground resistance to industries built on animal exploitation. Within that landscape, Keith became known as one of the Animal Liberation Front’s most determined and resourceful activists. His actions spared countless animals from suffering, and his willingness to take extraordinary risks for their freedom helped define an era of uncompromising resistance.
His imprisonment, including what was then the longest sentence ever handed down for animal liberation activity in the UK, became emblematic of the state’s response to a movement that refused to remain silent. Yet even under pressure, Keith continued to contribute to the movement’s historical record. His book From Dusk ’til Dawn remains one of the most substantial insider accounts of the growth of animal liberation organising, preserving stories, strategies, and lessons that might otherwise have been lost to time.
In later years, Keith shifted toward lawful campaigning and stood as a candidate for the Animal Protection Party in the 2010 General Election, reflecting the movement’s expanding strategies and its ongoing search for political footholds.
For many, Keith will be remembered as a bold and influential ALF activist whose actions changed the lives of other animals who would otherwise have been forgotten. His contribution sits within a long continuum of people who have resisted violence against animals in whatever ways were available to them. That history is complex, often contested, and always evolving, but Keith’s place within it is undeniable.
May he be remembered for the lives he saved, the history he helped document, and the conviction that all animals deserve total liberation.

Queen's Brian May on why we should all be vegan.

I wonder why humans think that eating other animals is a good way to celebrate peace on Earth.
How many vegans find themselves defending their non‑violent choices every holiday season? Jesse Eisenberg spoke with warmth about his family’s vegan Thanks Living, yet the interviewer’s jokes showed how unsettled some people feel when traditions are re‑examined. Eisenberg’s message was simple: compassion can be part of celebration, and choosing kindness doesn’t diminish culture, it enriches it.

New 2025 study: Animal agriculture contributes 12-20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, likely more.
📄 The Missing Target (2025) by Dr. Andrew Knight et al. spotlights industrialised animal farming as a core climate threat.
