Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, fervently believed in the unifying power of the Commonwealth:

‘Such a blend of traditions serves to make us stronger, individually and collectively … ingredients needed for social, political and economic resilience.’

May she rest in peace.

It was wonderful to catch up with Nilesh Makwana yesterday who gave me a copy of his book ‘Terminal 4 - An Entrepreneur’s Journey from Bicycle to Business Class.’ I am looking forward to reading it.

Nilesh penned ‘Terminal 4’ as a blueprint on how to succeed even under the most challenging circumstances, in his words: “I hope that ‘Terminal 4’ will serve as a manual guide to not only those international students who face difficulty to acclimatize to foreign conditions, but to each and every individual who reads the book. It reveals my journey and with it every challenge I faced, every mistake I made, and every problem I solved. My aim through this book is to communicate to my readers that failure is not the end of the world, and within challenges, lie possibilities.”

Thank you to the over 2,000 WA seniors who have contributed their thoughts on our first Seniors Strategy.

Your feedback will now help shape a whole-of-government strategy being developed by the WA Government to support older Western Australians to live their best life as they age.

In times of uncertainty, parents, teachers and students look to their school principals who provide leadership when it is needed the most.

Today is Primary Principals Day – and a good opportunity to recognise the efforts of our primary school leaders and thank them for everything they do for our community in the South Metropolitan region.

I know everyone appreciates it, we cannot thank you enough!

We’ve just launched the WA Schools Anti-Va**ng Toolkit to help schools address the issue of va**ng and e-cigarette use among students.

Va**ng is a growing concern for our parent and school communities and we want to make sure our schools are supported and resourced to tackle the issue.

I’d encourage parents from across the South Metropolitan region to visit www.education.wa.edu.au/drug-education and check out a range of materials available to help minimise va**ng amongst students.

Phase two of the strategy will see the launch of a major digital and print public education campaign.

This week is World Haemochromatosis Week.

World Haemochromatosis Week aims to increase awareness of the health implications of what is Australia’s most common genetic disorder. It causes your body to absorb too much iron from food. It is easy to test, simple to treat but tragic to ignore because the excess iron overloads body tissues, damages organs and can cause premature death. If left untreated it can cause serious health problems including liver cancer, diabetes and arthritis. Many people suffer the effects of haemochromatosis without being diagnosed because early symptoms are common with other conditions and include tiredness and aching joints. When detected early haemochromatosis can be managed easily through blood donations and is no barrier to a normal life or life expectancy.

Despite haemochromatosis being carried by one in seven people and affecting one in 200, it is often underdiagnosed because the symptoms of tiredness, muscle weakness and joint pain, are generic and non-specific.

If you are the 1 in 200 affected, it can cause serious health problems.

Ask your doctor, find out if you are storing too much iron.

Further information can be found via www.ha.org.au

A very Happy Mother's Day to all the mums, step mums, grandmothers, and everyone else who selflessly fills the role.

I would like to make a special mention to my wife Chew, second from left in the photo, who in addition to always being there for our kids Yin, Kiwi and DJ has been my #1 supporter. We love and appreciate you, Chew. Thank you.

Please hug the mother figures in your life extra tight today ❤️

COVID has made it difficult for P&Cs to fundraise for much-needed projects.

Sam Lim - WA Labor for Tangney understands the impact this is having on schools.

If elected, Sam has committed to providing $50,000.00 to Applecross Senior High School for shade structures plus other upgrades, and $20,000.00 to Kardinya Primary School for a bike shelter.

This funding forms part of an Albanese Labor Government's $440 million Schools Upgrade Fund.

It makes me proud to know that Sam Lim will work hard to support my electorate of Bateman.

Following an up-to-date Management Plan and training in is vital for being able to manage an emergency.

Encourage your school, childcare centre, carers or care providers to upskill to reduce risk and improve outcomes. Epilepsy WA offers nationally recognised courses in Understanding and Managing Epilepsy and in Administration of Emergency Medication. We have free care plan templates on our website under Information Resources.

***Call an ambulance immediately if you do not know the person or if there is no epilepsy management plan, if this is the person’s first seizure or if the person has another seizure soon after the first one. Also call an ambulance immediately if the seizure stops but the person does not regain consciousness within 5 minutes, the person is pregnant, if the person was eating or drinking when the seizure occurred, or if the seizure occurred in water.

So proud that tonight Anthony Albanese has announced that a Labor Government would fix the crisis in aged care.

Our plan includes better wages for aged care workers, more care each day for residents, 24 hour nurses in aged care, proper food provided and returning integrity to the sector.

This is real leadership.

April is a significant month this year for those of various faiths. Whether you are a follower of Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism or Islam I wish you peace and blessings for your celebrations.

For Muslims it is the holy month of fasting, introspection, prayer, blessings and togetherness for Ramadan.
For Jewish people it is the eight-day observance of the Israelites' exodus from slavery in Egypt nearly 3,000 years ago known as Passover.
For all Christians, including Eastern Orthodox, it is the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ known as Easter.
For Hindu people April marks the celebration of the birth of the God Rama known as Rama Navami.
For Sikhs Vaisakhi is usually celebrated on the 13th or 14th of April each year marking the beginning of the Sikh New Year.

With vacancy rates at a 40-year low in the private rental market and more than 17,000 families waiting for social housing, Community Housing providers like Connect Victoria Park are more important than ever.

A not-for-profit founded in 1957, Connect is currently home to 73 people over 60 on low incomes. Along with a secure and age-friendly home, Connect’s residents get all the benefits of the Village Hub, a membership-based community of people 55+ who share interests and help each other age well. Having somewhere to live that is secure, safe and with a long tenancy, is fundamental to having good health and mental wellbeing.

The team at Connect are looking to extend their support to an older single woman and are seeking assistance with fundraising and services to refurbish a unit in this regard. To learn more and contribute, visit https://chuffed.org/project/connect-housing-appeal

“Are you okay?”

It’s a simple - but incredibly important - question we need to be asking of those around us who could be struggling.
Every day people experience ups and downs; grief, relationship breakdown, financial difficulty or losing a job affect people differently. Sadly, at these times many people feel they don’t have anyone to confide in.

Today, on R U OK Day, let’s make the effort. Let’s check in with our friends, our family, our colleagues and ask the question: are you okay?

If you, or someone you know, needs help or advice, you can always call beyondblue on 1300 224 636 for their 24/7 free counselling service or Lifeline on 13 11 14 in a crisis situation.

To find services near you visit: https://myservices.org.au/

That's the theme for this year's National Child Protection Week, which runs until September 11.

It's a reminder for everyone that all children are equal and should have the same access to the supports they need to be healthy and to thrive.
