“Is it the hip? The groin? The spine? …or the pelvic floor?” 👀
That was one of the key questions explored in last week’s FitRight ProfessionalEd session on The Female Hip with FitRight Physiotherapist Jessica Vanson.
One of the reasons this topic resonates so strongly with clinicians is because female hip pain is rarely isolated. The overlap between musculoskeletal and pelvic health presentations can be significant and understanding how to “pull all the puzzle pieces together” can completely change assessment and management.
During the session, Jess covered:
💜 The overlap between the lumbo-pelvic-hip region and pelvic floor
💜 How MSK and pelvic health physios can better recognise when to refer on
💜 Common hip dysfunctions in women
💜 Manual therapy and exercise prescription considerations
Three standout takeaways:
- The clinical overlap between hip, groin, spine and pelvic floor presentations
- Practical screening tools across specialties
- A deep dive into GTPS and Deep Gluteal Syndrome assessment and management

I’ve worked as a pelvic health physio in the postnatal space for nearly 20 years and these are the 3 things I wish more women knew after having a baby.
Too many mums are either told to “wait until 6 weeks” for everything… or are cleared for exercise without any real assessment of their pelvic floor, abdominal wall, prolapse symptoms or overall recovery.
The reality? Postnatal recovery and return to exercise should be individualised.
💜 Early strength work can often be helpful
💜 Avoiding unnecessary deconditioning matters
💜 Returning to running or high impact exercise is about readiness — not just a date on the calendar
Your body deserves proper support after birth. Book a postnatal physiotherapist appointment here: https://fitrightwomenshealth.au/postnatal-physiotherapy/

“Maybe this is just normal…”
We hear this from women all the time about things like:
- painful periods
- leaking when exercising or sneezing
- painful s*x
- ongoing fatigue
- heavy bleeding
- hormone symptoms
- pelvic pain after birth
But just because something is common, doesn’t mean it’s something you need to simply put up with.
Our GP team takes a women’s-health focused approach to care, helping you investigate symptoms properly, understand what’s going on in your body and access the right support.
If something has been bothering you for a while, this could be your sign to stop brushing it off 💜

When we opened FitRight Women’s Health opened 5 years ago this month, our goal was simple — to empower women to take control of their pelvic health and general health in a holistic and sustainable way.
Since then, nearly 5,000 women have walked through our doors and accessed our specialist services 💜
But we also know that accessing private women’s health care isn’t financially possible for everyone, even when the support is truly needed.
That’s why, in line with our 5th birthday, we’re so proud to introduce something new to our community…
✨ The FitRight Women’s Health Grant ✨
Designed to help women access physiotherapy and exercise support when financial barriers may otherwise stand in the way.
This round includes:
💜 1 x $1000 grant
💜 2 x $500 grants

Endometriosis affects 1 in 7 women… yet so many are still told painful periods are “normal.”
As part of Pelvic Pain Awareness Month, we want to help raise awareness around the signs and symptoms of endometriosis - because persistent pelvic pain deserves to be taken seriously.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. This can cause inflammation, pain and sometimes scarring.
Common symptoms can include:
- Painful periods that aren’t relieved by simple pain relief
- Heavy bleeding or bleeding between cycles
- Pain with in*******se
- Pain with bowel motions or urination
- Bloating or nausea
- Fertility challenges
A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can help by:
- Supporting pain management
- Treating pelvic floor dysfunction
- Assisting with bladder and bowel symptoms
- Helping reduce pain with in*******se
- Guiding safe and appropriate exercise
- Supporting nervous system regulation
You do not have to “just put up with it.”
If pelvic pain is impacting your quality of life, support is available 💜

Prolapse management is not as simple as better pelvic floor strength = less prolapse
Pelvic floor muscles often hold too much tension and learning how to relax them could be a key part of decreasing your prolapse symptoms.
Vaginal support pessaries can be a very important puzzle piece in the conservative management of prolapse. These can act “like an ankle brace for your vagina” and allow you to move and exercise with less symptoms.
A prolapse diagnosis does not mean you can never lift heavy or run again.
If you’re experiencing prolapse symptoms, our Women’s Health Physios can help you better understand your body and create a personalised management plan to support your goals and lifestyle.

Did you know… that you’re likely to carry the herpes virus? 💜
Around 80% of Australians carry HSV-1, the virus that causes herpes.
Yet despite how common it is, herpes is still surrounded by stigma and misinformation.
The reality is:
• Many people never develop symptoms
• Many don’t realise they have it
• It’s manageable with the right care and support
• People with HSV can have healthy, normal relationships and lives
A diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone and you deserve clear, respectful and judgement-free healthcare.
At FitRight Women’s Health, our Women’s Health GPs are here to answer questions, provide support and help you feel informed and empowered about your health.

The number one thing that’s changed for the better in pelvic health and pregnancy…
It’s becoming the norm now for women to have PROACTIVE pelvic floor assessments in pregnancy - not just waiting to see if they have problems after birth.
Pelvic floor assessment and treatment in pregnancy as part of preparation for vaginal birth, and prevention or management of bladder issues, is so much more common now in my practice and I’m here for it!
We look at..
- can you pelvic floor contract?
- can your pelvic floor relax?
- can your pelvic floor co-ordinate with a cough?
- can your pelvic floor avoid turning on when you’re bearing down (pushing)?
Not to mention more globally looking at strength, mobility and alignment in our body to cope with the demands of pregnancy, birth and new motherhood.
Taking the guesswork out of pelvic health in the childbearing years is a game changer - I LOVE working in this space 💜
