On December 29th last year I was interviewed by Ben for his Invisible Ink Podcast. I find watching myself a bit cringe, but I've sat through an hour and a quarter so far and can see I was hyper, excited, oversharing and sometimes appear like I'm on something - but I really wasn't! It's a perfect example of Shane feeling he's in a safe place, (over?) enthusiastically sharing just about everything. I hope it's entertaining, even if I go all over the place with various anecdotes.
We cover a lot of ground: music obsession, music writing and my books, Dad's story, family issues, neurodivergence and how that impacts creativity and life in general. It's a lot, to be honest. Completely raw, unfiltered and honest (complete with tripping over my words a couple of times in my enthusiasm, and a couple of timeline errors due to being excited). If you want a pretty good overview about my creative life, this is a damn good place to start.
Thanks for having me Ben, it was a trip, man.

Lotta s**t going on today out there in the wild. For those further afield, today is ANZAC Day, where we remember and thankk those who have served in the Australian and New Zealand armed forces to protect our way of life and quality of life.

As a confirmed pacifist and a bit of a (heavy metal) hippy, I'm anti-war. Of course I am - everyone SHOULD be!

But there have been wars which are necessary. Which defeat the evil of horrible men (why is it almost always men, FFS?!?!) And I think the people who went to fight in those wars - ESPECIALLY the ones from years ago when times and attitudes were very different, when they didn't have a choice due to conscription or family or societal attitudes or whatever.

These people do not deserve to be booed for having done their best in impossible situations. There's a big difference between actively supporting a genocide in the middle east in 2026 and serving in WWII or Vietnam because you felt you had to or it was the right thing to do.

AND... it's 2026 so we shouldn't even have to mention the futility and obnoxious hate of racism. The sort of people who would boo a Welcome to Country are just filth. They have no respect for tradition, values, communities other than their own. The oldest continuous living culture in the world, in fact.

Shame on the haters. Doubly so when they're booing an Indigenous veteran delivering a Welcome to Country (this happened over East, I believe).

I just don't understand hatred of different groups of people - racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. We're all PEOPLE. And even if dogs are ALWAYS the best people, most of the people people deserve our support as well - at the very least in a 'live and let live' sense. Except the di*****ds out there showing complete disrespect, not only disrespect for those speaking, but also for the other attendees who are there out of respect - the exact sort of respect the haters are jealous of because they have a hole in their heart where that respect should be.

Do better, cnuts. Do a LOT better.

Just finished a short story - first one I've written in a fair while, in fact - and pleased with how it ended up. Most surprised that it came to me so quickly after reading the criteria for it, and the first draft was completed yesterday in under an hour. A few edits and a final tweak this morning and it is submitted. Chuffed with that!

Way back in the nineties I was in a bar in Greece, it was the afternoon and I was alone. Until an American guy started chatting. I had a Flaming Sambucca where you cup the glass to the palm of your hand and shake it, then drink, then snort the alcoholic fumes through a straw. And this guy wanted to try.
Over and over he tried, with my very best tuition (by which time he'd drink not much at all but i was well on my way), but he kept spilling the Sambucca all over the bar. Which, inevitably, led to spilling it one too many times, this time with the flame still intact... and whooooosh!!!! All that spilt sambucca on the bar went up in flames!!!!
Unsurprisingly, the up-until-then amicable bardude freaked out, sprayed his fire extinguisher everywhere, and kicked us out of the bar
That was a fun afternoon!
