We are hosting a screening of award-winning YURLU | COUNTRY. Do not miss this powerful film, directed by Walkley Award-winning filmmaker Yaara Bou Melhem and co-created with Banjima Elder Maitland Parker.

This deeply moving film follows his final year as he fights to heal his ancestral lands, scarred by the largest contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia’s own Chernobyl.

Set against the breathtaking yet contaminated landscapes of Western Australia’s Pilbara region, YURLU | COUNTRY lays bare the devastating impact of the Wittenoom asbestos mines, where millions of tonnes of waste laced with deadly asbestos fibres have poisoned both land and people. This largely unknown toxic legacy has been on Banjima lands for more than 60 years and the contamination is spreading.

With sold-out screenings at film festivals, international acclaim and the 2025 Walkley Award for Documentary, the film has received widespread recognition.

First Nation Rangers are proud to host the film screening at our Bentley Campus:

Mines close. Country doesn't. πŸͺƒ
What comes next should be shaped with the people whose Country it is.

This is why we're proud to co-host the First Nations Mine Closure & Transitions Summit:

πŸ“Darwin Convention Centre
πŸ“… 10–12 November 2026, on Larrakia Country.

Around 240 mines are set to close across Australia by 2040, much of that land is on or near First Nations Country. This Summit exists to make sure Traditional Owners lead the decisions about how Country is restored, cared for and handed back for generations to come.

Big thanks to Zane Hughes, Gowan Bush (CRC TiME), Michelle Adams (BHP), and our co-hosts Curtin University, CRC TiME and Department of Industry, Science and Resources. 🀝

πŸ“… Registrations open mid-July.

🌟 The vision is alive across our nation! 🌟

We are incredibly proud to share these powerful testimonies from YOUR feedback about the First Nation Ranger Program. From the red earth of the Kimberley to the coastal plains of Tasmania, your voices have shaped not just words, but the very outline of our Country.

What fills us with pride:
✨ Rangers from WA speaking about "Heritage" and "Knowledge"
✨ Northern voices calling for "Leadership" and "Training"
✨ Eastern communities emphasizing "Opportunity" and "Success"
✨ Southern regions highlighting "Family" and "Generation"
✨ And everywhere - the call for "Empowerment"

Your powerful visions for the future:
πŸ’¬ "Ranger working on country teaching our younger generation and looking after country and delivering their own programs to their communities"
πŸ’¬ "Having our rangers now be the trainer and assessors for the junior rangers that come through"
πŸ’¬ "More first nation rangers becoming and getting leadership jobs within their communities"
πŸ’¬ "Cultural learning, Cultural respect and authority, elders mentoring students"
πŸ’¬ "Self sustaining programs through education in community"

Your feedback shows that this isn't just a program - it's a vision being embraced from the tropical north to the temperate south, from our vast western deserts to our eastern coastlines.

Every word represents a Ranger, an Elder, a Community Member who took the time to share their hopes for the next 10 years.

Together, you've painted a picture of First Nation Rangers who are qualified professionals, cultural knowledge holders, and leaders teaching the next generation.

We hear you. We see you. And together, we're building this future.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their voice. This is just the beginning of our journey together! 🧑
